Greenfield, too, is the locale to find
a retail anomaly— the independent
bookstore in the form of Book Beat
(26010 Greenfield, 248-968-1190).
Hardly the kind of place to run in
quickly for something to read on
the plane, Book Beat can be at times
both daunting (watch your step!) and
other-worldly (my how the time flies
when buried deep in a good book).
To say Book Beat is a treasure hunt is
putting it mildly.
Just south of 11 Mile, set back a
way from a fast-food joint, is a retail-
ing curiosity, at least in these parts,
where big savings are guaranteed
every day. It's not a warehouse club
along the lines of a Costco. And it
certainly is not a mass merchant
in the vein of a Target or Wal-Mart.
Nor is it a discounter like Tuesday
Morning or Marshall's.
Rather, it's a German import
known as Aldi (26300 Greenfield,
and www.aldifoods.com for hours
and other locations). And while the
savings are real inside the tidy, no-
frills store, today's bargain may be
tomorrow's disappearing act as the
selection changes like the wind, or
more precisely, depending on what
deals its buyers can uncover.
From grocery basics, wine and
imported chocolate to perishables,
pet food and school supplies, Aldi
may take some getting used to, but,
much like the street it calls home, its
quirkiness is its appeal.
Just east of Greenfield is another
specialty house, Doll Hospital & Toy
Soldier Shop (3947 West 12 Mile,
248-543-3115). A landmark at holi-
day time, it specializes year-round in
specialty toys, dolls and a compre-
hensive teachers' section.
Each of the municipalities through
which Greenfield passes, under the
direction of their respective parks and
recreation departments, libraries or
community centers, sponsors events,
athletics and educational programs
large and small, from multi-ethnic
and multi-generational celebrations
to dance classes, Tai Chi lessons, com-
puter workshops and soccer leagues.
