Also in the neighborhood, Biegas
Gallery (35 E. Grand River, 313-961-
0634) displays the works of regional
contemporary artists. Make sure to visit
the gallery's Purple Door Tearoom for a
thoughtful, inspired respite.
A handful of galleries and artist
cooperatives make their homes just
south of the Cultural Center, including
the respected Detroit Artists Market
(4719 Woodward, 313-832-8540),
C-Pop Gallery (4160 Woodward, 313-
833-9901), known far and wide for
its avant garde, colorful shows, and
the Art Exchange Gallery/Museum
(2966 Woodward, 313-831-1200), rec-
ognized for its multi cultural exhibits
and programming.
Plays, musicals, concerts, ballet, operas
and comedy acts, plus big league sport-
ing events draw crowds year-round to
this Woodward corridor. Even those
without a Woodward Avenue-proper
address benefit from its adjacency,
including Music Hall Center for
the Performing Arts (350 Madison,
313-963-2366) Detroit Opera House
(1526 Broadway, 313-961-3500), and
Gem Theatre (333 Madison, 313-963-
9800), plus PuppetART (25 E. Grand
River, 313-961-7777), where puppets,
not actors or actresses, rule the stage.
Puppetry-related shows are
held every Saturday after-
noon at 2:00 from September
through May.
Show houses fronting
Woodward include the
fabulous Fox Theatre (2211
Woodward, 313-596-3200),
and Max M. Fisher Music
Center and Orchestra Hall
(3711 Woodward, 313-576-
5111), home to the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra, as
well as Wayne State's under-
graduate theater company,
which takes to the stage at
the Bonstelle Theatre (3424
Woodward, 313-577-2960).
The NFL's Detroit Lions
earn a living at Ford Field
(2000 Brush St., 313-262-
2000), while the Detroit Tigers
take to the diamond next
door at Comerica Park (2100
Woodward, 313-471-2000).
More than just greenery
and a place to sit back and
contemplate the world,
Campus Martius (www.
campusmartiuspark.org)
hosts year-round program-
ming including free concerts, movies
and ice skating, plus robust gardens,
restored historic monuments, sculp-
tural lighting and glorious fountains.
America's Thanksgiving Parade
(www.theparade.org) makes its
annual trek down Woodward Avenue
on Turkey Day, immediately following
the 10k Turkey Trot running race.
The evening prior in Campus Martius,
Detroit Aglow officially kicks off the
holiday season.
Indeed, downtown Detroit hums
throughout the year with festivals
and celebrations for just about
every theme. Our Independence
Day and Canada Day are acknowl-
edged in explosive style during the
International Freedom Festival
(www.theparade.org ). North America's
largest free jazz festival, the Detroit
International Jazz Fest (www.
detroitjazzfest.com ), now in it's 26th
year, spans venues throughout the
Central Business District each Labor
Day weekend, and the merchants of
Greektown host an annual weekend-
long art fair in early June.
