ROYAL OAK FROM PAGE 43

finds the friendly Lily's Seafood (410 S.
Washington, 248-591-5459), and authen-
tic tapas at Sangria (401 S. Lafayette,
248-543-1964), where the namesake
drink is a must.
Two Italian stalwarts, Lepanto (116 W.
Fourth, 248-541-2228) and D'Amato's (222
S. Sherman, 248-584-7400), vie for atten-
tion with differing takes on what's probably
the country's favorite ethnic food.
Breakfast, too, is not forgotten thanks
to the Parisian-inspired gem Café Muse
(317 S. Washington, 248-544-4749), which
bowed earlier this year, and the recent
addition of a seven-days-a-week breakfast
menu at the colorful, over-the-top Pronto
(608 S. Washington, 248-544-7900).
Finally, when the age-old Italian versus
Chinese debate reaches a stalemate, agree
to disagree and opt for a tasteful trek at
what is sure to be metro Detroit's only
Nepalese restaurant, Kathmandu Chullo
(411 S. Washington, 248-546-7286).

Save for a man's bespoke suit or decadent
sable coat, you can pretty much find any-
thing for sale in the neighborhood.

OCTOBER • 2006

For starters there's Funky 7 (411 S.
Main, 248-398-6700), with its offbeat T-
shirts; the junior-focused Pitaya (211 S.
Main, 248-545-6666); the denim-centric
Chaud Jeans (414 S. Washington, 248-
399-3980); and of-the-moment retailer
American Apparel (405 S. Washington,
248-547-1904) for sublimely simple and
comfortable, logo-free American-made T-
shirts and casual wear.
Also peddling wares are Incognito
(323 S. Main, 248-548-2980), known
for its avant-garde, iconic clothing and
accessories for men and women; Shapes
(319 S. Main, 248-547-4990) for frothy
frocks; the fetishist's playground, Noir
Leather (124 W. Fourth, 248-541-3979);
and new-to-the-scene Prodigy (360 S.
Main, 248-544-2550) for sleek men's and
women's fashions.
In addition to being a savvy lot, Royal
Oak's merchants are literal, too, at least
when it comes to branding their establish-
ments. There's Superior Fish (309 E. 11
Mile, 248-541-4632), known region-wide
for its, dare it be said, superior quality and
selection; the hobbyist's Nirvana that is
The Stamping Grounds (228 W. Fourth,

248-543-2190); Lost and Found Vintage
(208 W. 11 Mile, 248-548-6154) where
one man's "junk" is certain to be another's
treasure sooner or later; and the Uppity
Puppy (706 S. Washington, 248-336-2380)
with all the bells and whistles today's
pampered pooches would ever need.
There's also neat-as-a-pin Rare Old
Prints (516 S. Washington, 248-548-
5588), so hushed you'll hear that pin drop;
Footprints (122 S. Main, 248-542-0901)
for casual, comfortable footwear; the
Lilliputian-sized Burn Rubber (202 W.
Fourth, 248-543-3000) for the coolest
trainers for men and women; and Write
Impressions (310 W. Fourth, 248-541-
8921) for those who prefer putting pen to
paper rather than finger to keyboard.
Also in the mix is the fun and funky
home accessory store Shine (621 S.
Washington, 248-414-5277), and Poppy
Beauty Bar (412 S. Washington, 248-
545-7466) stocking hard-to-find cosmet-
ics and skincare lines.
To all of this add clothing choices
for the smallest members of the family.
Moms-to-be will want to check out the
