Meet one of the faces of success
With more than 1,00o different
types, neurological disorders are
complex and many affect the brain,
spine, muscles, nerves, balance,
speech as well as senses of sight,
sound, taste,
smell and
touch. This
means that
people with
neurological
disease
require the
expertise of
not one but
many different
specialty
physicians.
Recognizing that a team approach
is vital, the Henry Ford
Neuroscience Institute was estab-
lished in 1996 to bring together the
many medical, surgical and
research specialties required to
provide state-of- the-art treatment
and high-quality care to patients
with neurological disease.
The co-directors of the institute are
Michael Chopp, Ph.D., scientific
director; Stanton Elias, M.D.,
chair, Neurology , and Mark L.
Rosenblum, M.D., chair,
Neurosurgery, and Manuel Brown,
M.D., chair, Radiology.
The institute's mission emphasizes
collaboration among all critical
areas of neuroscience including
Neurology, Neurosurgery,
Neuroscience Research, Radiology,
Pathology,
Otolaryngology,
Ophthalmology,
anesthesiology,
and Behavioral
Health, among
others such as
Emergency
Medicine,
Medical
Oncology and
Radiation
Oncology.
Together, hundreds of experts at
Henry Ford work to turn life-
threatening neurological diseases
into controllable conditions.

affecting any of
the five senses,

oped what is
rare to find — a
Tinnitus Center
and a Taste and
Smell program.
Henry Ford
Neuroregeneration Center:
Henry Ford's neuroscience research
team was the first in the United
States to be granted an NIH Program
Project to study neuroregeneration
therapies that aim to remodel the

Vets Mark 60 Years
Members of the Jewish War Veterans Joseph Bale Post 474 held their
60th annual dinner meeting at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West

supplied clothing, toiletries, refreshments and held parties for patients
at Michigan's six veterans hospitals; awarded scholarships to veterans'
children and aided veterans readjusting to civilian life. Shown are Post
Commander Roy Clark, Quartermaster Herb Bensen and Junior Vice
Commander Alan Nathan.
Henry Ford Stroke
and Neurovascular Center:
The Henry Ford stroke team is one
of only 14 National Institutes of
Health (NIH) designated Stroke
Centers in the United States.
Henry Ford Hermelin Brain
Tumor Center: The Henry Ford
brain tumor team has been the only
Michigan team
continuously
selected for the
National
Cancer
Institute's
brain tumor
consortium for
the past 10
years.
Henry Ford
Spine &
Neurotrauma Center: The
Henry Ford spine and neurotrauma
team was the first in the world to
deliver shaped-beam radiosurgery
to relieve spine cancer spine without
damaging a person's ability to walk.
Jerusalem/JTA — Google is expand-
ing operations in Israel. The leading
Internet search engine announced
Tuesday that it plans to open a
research and development center in
Tel Aviv next year.
The center will seek to build part-
nerships with Israeli universities
and institutions, Google said in a
statement. The company already has
an office in Haifa.
Washington/JTA — President
Bush signed the Darfur Peace and
Accountability Act. Jewish groups led
lobbying for the act, signed by Bush
last Friday.
The act bans dealing with Sudan
until it abides by a peace treaty with
tribes in the Darfur region and allows
an international peacekeeping force.
Jerusalern/JTA — Israel marked 20
years since air force navigator Ron
Arad went missing in action. Israeli
schools held commemorative classes
and television and radio stations
aired discussions Monday on Arad,
who became a cause celebre after
bailing out of his crippled warplane
over Lebanon on Oct. 16, 1986.
Defense
Minister. Amir Peretz said in a
statement that Israel would continue
its efforts to recover the airman,
based on the assumption that he
is alive. Arad was held by Shi'ite
militiamen in Lebanon before disap-
pearing.

Woman Eyes Presidency
New York/JTA — A former Israeli
consul general in New York announced
her bid to become the Jewish state's
first female president. Colette Avital,
now a senior Labor Party member,
said Tuesday she would like to succeed
embattled President Moshe Katsay.
Israel's ceremonial president is chosen
by a Knesset vote and serves for seven
years.
Katsav is scheduled to end his
term in 2007 but is widely expected
to resign early as he is facing pos-
sible prosecution on rape charges.
Also touted as candidates are Tel Aviv
Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, former
Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin and
Vice Premier Shimon Peres, who ran
for the post in 2000 and lost to Katsay.
