Jerusalem Jill

Temple Kol Ami hosts a free concert
with Jill Rogoff,
a founding
member of the
IFS, the National
Folk Music
Association in
Israel, 3 p.m.
Sunday,
Oct.
Jill Rogoff
22, at the West
Bloomfield synagogue located at 5085
Walnut Lake Road.
A soprano, Rogoff will sing — and
play various instruments — in a
program of Israeli and Jewish music.
The native New Zealander has lived in
Jerusalem since 1979.
She travels extensively as a music
ethnologist, collecting, preserving and
performing a wide range of Jewish and
Israeli music in many languages. Her
repertoire embraces traditional Celtic
and British Isles songs, early music
and contemporary material, which
also includes her own songs. She has
recorded six solo albums to date.
The concert is open to the public;
reservations required. (248) 661-0040.

Tops In Pops

At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, Jewish
composer Randy Newman appears

League official who hadn't seen
the film said he doubted that an
evangelical filmmaker could pres-
ent Esther's story in the tradition-
ally Jewish way.

Other Premieres

Also opening Friday, Oct.13, is Man
of the Year, starring Robin Williams

as a Jon Stewart-type comic talk-
show host who runs for president
on.a lark, and wins. The film is
directed and written by Oscar-
winner Barry Levinson, who very
much needs a hit after a string of
flops. Jeff Goldblum and Lewis
Black have supporting roles.
Opening the same day is Grudge
2, the sequel to a horror-mystery
film that was abox office hit for
Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar only

in a solo concert at Ann Arbor's
Michigan Theater. While his peers
have focused
on confessional
songwrit-
ing, Newman,
drawing on his
dark sense of
humor, invents
Randy Newman
characters, cre-
ating a world of
misfits, outcasts, charlatans and con
men. He continues to compose in his
signature style for film scores — from
the Toy Story movies to A Bug's
Life to Monsters Inc., for which he
won his first
Oscar. Tickets
are $36.50-$65.
(248) 645-6666.
Then, Paul
Simon breezes
into town
— this time
Paul Simon
without Art
Garfunkel — on
Tuesday, Oct. 17, when he'll take the
stage live in concert at 7:30 p.m. at
Detroit's Fox Theatre. Now on the con-
cluding leg of his first solo tour since
2001, he'll mix in more edgy selec-
tions from his new Brian Eno-pro-
duced album, Surprise, with several
decades worth of his hits and choice
album cuts. Tickets are $45-$85. (248)

has a small role in the sequel;
she dies early on, and her role as
the mystery investigator is taken
over by Amber
Tamblyn (Joan

of Arcadia).

Personally,
I always have
had a grudge
against Ms.
Gellar. For some
reason,
she has
Sarah Michelle
always
acted
as
Gellar
if somebody was
torturing her when asked about
her Jewish background – despite
the fact that both her parents are
Jewish and her mother comes
from a religious family. Meanwhile,
Tamblyn, who isn't Jewish, is a
total "Semitophile" who says she
celebrates Chanukah and wants to
marry a Jewish boy someday.
