" JCC Adds More B-Ball Tryouts Mail For Chanukah A call from a parent alerted the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield that tryouts for the Kenny Goldman Basketball League were scheduled on Sunday, Oct. 8, the second day of Sukkot. More than 650 kids ages 6-16 comprise the league, and about a dozen of them are Orthodox or otherwise observant of Sukkot, said Bruce Wineman, JCC sports and recreation director. Tryouts still will be held Oct. 8 with an additional tryout added at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9. The tryouts place the children in six brackets for boys ages 6 and younger, and ages 16 and younger, for the season that runs from Oct. 8 to Dec. 17. Girls are in one bracket, ages 14 and younger. Wineman said tryouts probably won't be needed in most cases. "We already know most of the kids," he said. "After seeing them play, we can place them." Beginning next week, area post offices should begin offering a stamp created to celebrate Chanukah. The dreidel stamp, created in 2004 and used in 2005, will be revalued for the current 39-cent postal rate. If a post office does not have the stamp in stock by Oct. 15, Ronald Scheiman, founder of the Quest for Annual Hanukkah Stamps, suggests sending an e-mail to the postmaster general at pmgceo@email.usps.gov, and a copy to Scheiman at hanukkah@ myspeedworks.com ." Scheiman, a retired postal employee living in Florida, also sug- gests: "Buy extra Chanukah stamps and use them even past the holiday season. Let us show the United States Post Office that there is a demand for the Chanukah stamp." And he added, "If your local post office puts up a Christmas display, insist that they put up a Chanukah menorah, without a Star of David on it, as well. If the postmaster or any supervisor tells you a menorah is not an accepted decoration, tell him to look in the Post Office Operations Manual, section 124.55,e and 124.57,c." These entries, which Scheiman was instrumental in having changed, states that a Chanukah meno- rah is an acceptable seasonal display. - Harry Kirsbaum, staff writer Traveling Sukkot Services Congregation B'nai Moshe will be celebrating Simchat Torah this year not in the synagogue, but at four different locations on the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus in West Bloomfield — all as an outreach to the Jewish elderly in the community. Rabbi Elliot Pachter and Cantor Earl Berris will lead the traveling service that will begin at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 14 with singing at Fleischman Residence, followed by Minchah services and a Torah celebration at 6:30 p.m. at Danto. From 7-7:45 p.m., the group will move to Hechtman Apartments for Ma'ariv, haka- fot and a snack. From 8-8:45 p.m. at Meer Apartments, the clergy will conclude the hakafot, do Torah reading and enjoy a snack. Singing, dancing and the joyous cel- ebration will be spread through the evening. The traveling services are open to the community, and provide service for those not able to attend a synagogue. Families of residents are encouraged to join the fun. All the facilities are within walking distance. For more information, call B'nai Moshein West Bloomfield, (248) 788-0600.
