ewish novelist Anthony
Horowitz has written 26
books and countless television
scripts. But his most fascinating literary
work probably would be his own auto-
biography.
British-born Horowitz, 50, visited
Birmingham recently to talk about the
new movie Alex Rider: Operation
Stormbreaker, which opens Friday,
Oct. 13, in area theaters. It's based on
his popular Alex Rider adventure book
series (six so far) for youngsters, which
has sold 10 million copies since 2000
— half in the United States. This is the
first time a book featuring the character
has been made into a film. Horowitz is
an executive producer.

JN: There's a lot of action
in your novels, just like your
real life.

AH: I was born into a wealthy family
with plenty of nannies and servants. My
father was a businessman in the world
of Prime Minister Harold Wilson's Labor
Party. Fearing bankruptcy, he took his
money out of Swiss banks — about
5 million pounds — and put it into a
British bank [under] an assumed name,
then died. We never found it. I was a fat,
shy boy, and my mother put me into
a boarding school, where I was often
flogged just for "talking:'

JN: Are you religious?
AH: Our family used to observe the

Jewish holidays, but I didn't have a bar
mitzvah. I'm afraid I lost my Jewishness
when my parents died young. My father
was a very liberal Jew. I married a
Jewish woman, Jill Green, who's a movie
producer. The wedding ceremony was
in Hong Kong, and I didn't understand
a word of it.

JN: I hear you had some
interesting experiences

JN: When did you start
writing?
AH: I Nvrote a play in school at the age

of 8.1 found solace in James Bond mov-
ies to escape my dreadful childhood. I
feel it's important to get youngsters into
books. I like to write fast-paced stories
for boys and girls who don't like to
read. This is the golden age of children's
books, with J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter
books, etc.

JN: Tell us about Alex Rider:

Operation Stormbreaker.
Isn't Rider sort of a junior
James Bond?
AH: Rider is a cool 14, a reluctant teen-
aged super-spy. We chose Alex Pettyfer
to play him from 500 teenagers through
five auditions. It's a family film: no pro-
fanity, no sex, no blood. Its filled with
action, requiring 50 stunt personnel,
with chases and martial arts fights.
Alex's uncle, played by Ewan
McGregor, gets killed while a spy for
M16. They recruit and train Alex to
infiltrate the organization of a sinister
billionaire, who's [played by] Mickey
Rourke, with the help of Alex's house-
keeper, played by Alicia Silverstone. The
villain is donating Stormbreaker mega-
computers to every school in Britain,
but there's an evil plot behind this, with
Rider literally riding to the rescue.
