Who's thinking what

WHAT BOOK, CD, MOVIE OR OTHER MEDIA ARE
YOU LONGING TO SHARE WITH OTHERS?

"Being a nice Jewish girl and being in horror movies doesn't
exactly make sense," admits ELLEN SANDWEISS. But the
actress, who played Cheryl in former Detroiter Sam Raimi's
1981 cult classic The Evil Dead, says she's made peace with
her fame among horror-movie fans.
Sandweiss, who now lives in Berkley, grew up in
Birmingham and attended Groves High School in Beverly
Hills with Raimi and was as surprised as anyone when the
low-budget film became a cult sensation with thousands
of fans and dozens of Web sites. "For many years, I was
embarrassed about The Evil Dead," says Sandweiss. "It's a
real cheesy, over-the-top, violent horror film."
But 25 years after the film catapulted her to underground
celebrity and having raised daughters Jessy, 20, and Ali,
17, Sandweiss is resurrecting her place in the horror-flick
genre: She joined forces with two other women co-stars
in the film to make publicity appearances as "Ladies of the
Evil Dead," which has resulted in several film offers. Among
them was last year's Satan's Playground, helmed by horror
director Dante Tomaselli and released on DVD in August. In
other words, she's baaaaack. Here, we ask Sandweiss our
version of the Four Questions.

MI For years, my hairstylist, Marcos, has been
telling me about Beth Hart, because he knows that
I love blues singers; but his suggestion that I listen
to her music basically went in one ear and out the
other. Finally I downloaded her album Leave the
Light On and couldn't believe my ears. At times,
it's like she's channeling Janis Joplin, but better
– like when Janice actually had a semblance of a
voice left. This woman sings with so much emo-
tion it's difficult to imagine her getting through
these songs and being able to draw a breath
afterward.

and why?

for unequivocally Jewish actresses. Plus, she would
really crack me up if she did her "Baby Snooks"
voice over bagels.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD?

0y, such a tough question! I guess if you
force me to choose only one I'd have to say
lokshezz huge!, especially my mother's. The noodles
that are crisp and brown on top, combined with
the creamy-cheesy stuff and cherries, are a delight
to the senses — especially when eaten along with a
nice dairy tray with lots of extra Swiss cheese, tuna
salad and chubs, onions or creamed herring.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED
TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH ONE
BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE,
WHO WOULD IT BE?

I'd have to say Fanny Brice, a comedian, singer
and entertainer who headlined the Ziegfeld
Follies from 1910-1930. After her death, she was
depicted on stage and film by Barbra Streisand in
Funny Girl. She's not a biblical or historical fig-
ure, in the political sense, but she definitely had
a strong impact — both from an arts perspective
as well as a female perspective. She paved the way
not only for comic actresses in this country but

Maybe since a lot of what I've done in my
life has been so nontraditional, it might surprise
people to know I was actually a relatively strict
parent when my children were growing up. To
their absolute mortification, I was always the mom
who called the parents of the party house to see if
they would be home. Or, when they were younger,
enforcing bedtimes. I guess I figured a bohemian
lifestyle didn't jibe well with raising well-adjusted
children.
