You Be The Judge'

The public is invited to a six-week
course on Jewish judicial law
called "You Be the Judge,' co-spon-
sored by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for
Jewish Education and
the Hyman and Sonia
Blumenstein Outreach
Institute of the Sara
and Morris Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah
Center.
Classes will meet
7:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays
beginning Oct. 24 at
Rabbi Silberberg
the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building, 6735 Telegraph,
Bloomfield Township.
Students will examine bais din
(court of Jewish law) cases such as:
• If you are hired to give an
inflated property assessment and
then are not paid for the service
performed, can you collect in court?
•What is your liability if you lose
a piece of costume jewelry that you
agreed to watch, and it turns out to
be real?
• Do you have to compensate your
neighbor if, under gunpoint, you
deliver his property to robbers?
The course is presented by Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg of the Torah
Center who has served on the bais
din under the jurisdiction of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis of
Metro Detroit. He is the author of
three books on Jewish law.
The course is a creation of the
Jewish Learning Institute. The
Torah Center, at 5595 Maple in West
Bloomfield, will offer this course
10:30 a.m.-noon on six Sundays
beginning Oct. 22.

A beginning course in Jewish tradi-
tions, history and holidays is offered
for those considering conversion or
interested in studying Judaism.
The 11-week program begins
Tuesday, Oct. 10, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Classes are taught by Temple Israel
clergy and include a variety of read-
ings and study materials. Topics
include lifecycle events, stereotypes,
the Holocaust and a Chanukah
workshop. The class includes a
Shabbat dinner at Temple Israel.
Cost is $130 per person or $150
per couple. To register, contact the
