1 Letters No DeVos Fan While the letter "Principle First" about Dick DeVos not speaking to the American Arab Public Affairs Committee pleases me (Sept. 21, page 8), I still can't vote for the man. Anyone whose family is willing to donate $10,000 to support a Christian fundamentalist boycott against Ford Motor while claim- ing to support jobs in Michigan' is a hypocrite (source: http://gal. org/trianglefoundation/notice- description.tcl?newsletter_ id=2269225). Anyone that supports teach- ing creation in the public schools and tries to pass it off as "science" instead of religion probably doesn't have the Jews' best interest at heart (source: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs . dll/article?AID=/20060920/ NEWS99/60920015). The difference between the Jews and Christian fundamental- ists is that we're Jews, and they don't have to be. We Jews don't tell Christians how to worship. I don't have the same faith in the other direction. Gary Rimar Bloomfield Hills young people are searching for the intimate learning when in fact it is shared with many older citi- zens who are searching for more meaning in their prayers and a desire to look at Torah study as an active versus passive endeavor. Synagogues need to actively search for the balance between the glitz and learning, entertain- ment and social activities, young and old. Plaudits To Hillel As parents of three Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit graduates and a current seventh- grader, we are thrilled to see the hard work and dedication of Hillel's leadership come to frui- tion with the completion of its new Arts and Athletics facility ("Hillel Celebrates': Sept. 14, p. 49). The new facility is beautiful, but more importantly, it will enable Hillel's administration I found out from reading JN of the untimely death of Martha Jo Fleischmann, the Yiddish-English limericks writer I used to enjoy so much ("A Memory Window," Sept. 21, page 16). Needless to say, I was deeply saddened by her passing, even though I didn't know her personally. So as one who wrote a lot of limericks throughout the years, albeit in my native Hebrew, I would like to give her a little tribute in her own style. 'cha Don't Know -Goldfeln eqn3 isnpds pas Helping The Needy Thank you so much for your Editor's Letter on the Hebrew Free Loan Association ("Last Resort, First Lifeline': Sept. 28, page 7). It is the perfect time of year to run it. Helping fellow Jews hold on to their dignity in their most desperate moments constantly underscores in my own mind how richly blessed we are. We feel safe and secure in our lives with nice homes, good health, cohesive families. But if there is one thing I have learned from dealing with our HFLA clients, it is that, for many people, security is a very fragile and elu- sive thing indeed. Scott Leemaster HFLA board member Franklin Unwarranted Claims The level of hyperbole has reached a new level in those die- hards that continue to support the disastrous Bush presidency. To suggest that a Bush admin- istration during the time of the Holocaust would have resulted in many Jews saved is unbeliev- able, in my mind (Letters,"A Bush Defender," Sept. 21, page 11). Every president since Harry Truman has been a staunch sup- porter of Israel. One of Israel's best friends has been President Jimmy Carter, who brokered the peace deal between Israel and Egypt in 1978. Interestingly, this is the same president featured on full-page political ads paid for by the Republicans in an attempt to discredit fervent support of Israel by the Democratic Party. How quick people are in conveniently forgetting real, substantive sup- port of Israel, as President Carter provided, when it suits their political agenda. Make no mistake: the Republicans are in deep trouble this election cycle. Be prepared for even more desperate claims in support of this failed presi- dency and the rubber-stamp GOP Congress.
