FRIEDA "FRITA" DRAPKIN, 94,

of Southfield, died Sept. 21, 2006.
Frieda Roth Drapkin came to the
U.S. from Hungary
with her parents and
four younger broth-
ers in the 1920s. Her
experiences growing
up in Detroit form
the material for her
three autobiographi-
cal novels — Papa's
Drapkin
Golden Land,
Mama Is a Citizen
and A Tanta is Not a Madam
— and a mystery novel, Zadee and
the Angels of Mercy. Her writing
was both humorous and touching and
formed a bridge of love and under-
standing between the New World and
the Old.
Teacher, writer, lecturer, artist, crafts-
woman, musician — she received her
master's in education from Wayne State
University. She taught for more than 40
years in the Detroit Public Schools and
received a certificate of service from
the board of education for outstanding
achievement.
In 2003, at age 91, Mrs. Drapkin was
honored by the state of Michigan in
a special tribute for her lifelong mis-
sion of philanthropy. As president of
the Jewish Women International, she
promoted art shows and luncheon
fundraisers for treatment centers in
Israel and America. Her dedication,
humanity and strength were and con-
tinue to be an inspiration to all who
have known her.
She is survived by her husband of
67 years, Jack Drapkin of Southfield;
daughter and son-in-law, Jill and
Robert Montgomery of Northampton,
Mass.; sisters-in-law, Marcie Roth and
Cecil Roth.
