Dear
Barb, tely,
there's been a

about vitamin

vitamin D and how can I make
sure I'm getting enough? Thanks,

Interestingly, vitamin D
) is not considered a true
vitamin, since the hu-
man skin can create vi-
tamin D in the presence
/ of ultraviolet radiation
/ (UVB) from sunlight.

Back when most people
lived nearer the equator (and be-
fore concerns about sun-exposure
related cancers), vitamin D defi-
ciency was not the problem that it
is today. Fortified foods (e.g., milk)
are the major dietary source of
vitamin D. Other sources are fatty
fish, shitake mushrooms, whole
eggs, and vitamin supplements.
Per the FDA, The Daily Reference
Intake (DRI) for vitamin D is 400
IU (10 mcg). Not getting enough
sun/milk? Consider supplements.
