Just A Start
Many synagogues have already
informed their membership of the
project, with some to set up pledge
cards on Yom Kippur and for rabbis
to reinforce the need during services.
While any amount is welcome, a
suggested donation is $18 per person
and $36 for a family.
"In the haftorah read on Yom
Kippur, there is a moment where
Isaiah says,`You must take care of
everyone and provide for those in
need," Rabbi Yanoff said. "These
words say that our ritual acts are
important and need to be fueled by a
sense of caring and support for those
less fortunate. And that's what this is
all about"
And it's just the beginning.
"We hope people will give on Yom
Kippur, but also see this as a kickoff
to a year of chesed (act of kindness) ; )
Rabbi Yanoff said. "We asked area
rabbis to look for other partnerships
in the fight against hunger. We want
to see ongoing efforts for Mazon and
Yad Ezra and in programs like those
for the homeless at Temple Israel
and Adat Shalom (Synagogue) and
Shaarey Zedek."
And beyond raising funds, the
hope also is for the campaign to raise
awareness in those who may never
have made a donation to Mazon or
realized the extent of world hunger.
"I shared my dream of ending
hunger with my rabbis ; ) said Jacob,
who serves as national vice chair of
Mazon. "I said that we as a people
were able to free Jews from the Soviet
Union. Everyone was involved from
the bat and bar mitzvah kids to Max
Fisher and everyone in between. We
can do it again by involving everyone
to end hunger in America and Israel.
"This is the beginning of some-
thing really big. Just like freeing Jews
from the former Soviet Union, every
single person's participation will
make a big difference in changing
the world"
