sented the 2006 Grinspoon/Steinhardt
Award as an outstanding Jewish
educator by the Jewish Federation of.
Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for
Jewish Education.
A gifted educator, Friedman of
Farmington Hills has been a preschool
teacher for nearly 30 years. "There's
nothing more exciting to me than the
learning enthusiasm of a preschool
child:' she said. "I have never been
tempted by another career path."
Addressing an audience of commu-
nity educators, school directors, rabbis
and lay leaders at a gala reception Sept.
7, Federation President Peter Alter said,
"To learn and to teach is a high calling
and a priority Federation takes very
seriously"
Speakers also included Mandell L.
Berman; Sharon Hart, chair of Shalom
Street; and Robert Aronson, Federation •
CEO. Arthur Horwitz, AJE co-chair and
publisher of the Jewish News, pre-
sented the award.
A national honor, bestowed for the
first time this year in the Detroit Jewish
community, the Grinspoon-Steinhardt
Award was established in 2000 by the
Harold Grinspoon Foundation and
the Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt
Foundation to recognize outstanding
Jewish educators who have demon-
strated a career commitment to their
field.
As part of the award, Friedman
received a $1,500 stipend from the
Grinspoon and Steinhardt foundations
and an additional $1,000 cash prize
supported by the AJE to be used for
professional development.
Humanities Prize
The Benard L. Maas Foundation,
in cooperation with the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
invites individuals to submit nomina-
tions for the 2006 Benard L. Maas
Prize for Achievement in Jewish
Culture and Continuity. This year's
award will be given in the area of the
humanities.
Conferred annually on a rotat-
ing basis in the areas of humanities,
performing arts and tine arts, the
prize honors individuals whose work
enhances Jewish life and community
and encourages the exploration of
Jewish cultural issues.
Candidates must reside in Michigan
and may be a working writer, scholar
or educator. A $3,500 prize will be
awarded next spring.
The deadline for nominations is Oct.
