She's a 1973 graduate.- Casey, their Julie Fisher oldest son, Spent Cummings two years at Cranbrook; Tony- (class of '98) and Caroline (class of '99) had all their formative years at Cranbrook while living at home. Substantial evidence that Cranbrook won the hearts of the entire Cummings fam- ily was offered in this week's announcement of a $5 million gift for a new Girls Middle School on the Bloomfield Hills campus. The gift comes through the support of the Peter and Julie Cummings Family Foundation. The Cummings' gift, expected by school officials for.some time but kept con- fidential until now, helped push the Campaign for Cranbrook over the $100 million mark in June. Several other recent donations have moved that number to $109 mil- lion, more than two-thirds of the way toward Cranbrook's $150 million cam- paign goal. Of that amount, $16 mil- lion is earmarked for the Girls Middle School project. With the lead gift from the Cummings Foundation, Cranbrook now has raised more than half the amount required to fund construction of the new building. "It's a privilege and a joy for my generation of alumnae to be able to take the lead in giving back," Julie Cummings said. "This school and this community molded us into what we are today, not only professionally but in terms of our values, our life philos- ophies. The Girls Middle School has a very special place in my life and in the life of our daughter, Caroline!' She noted that the Kingswood motto, "Enter to learn, go forth to serve, sum- marizes her family's expe- rience with the school. "That sense of purpose for education and for civic life was consistent everywhere in my upbring- ing. Our Peter entire family Cummings is grateful that we've been able to learn and to serve our community, and Cranbrook is at the heart of both:' said Cummings, daughter of the late philan- thropist Max Fisher. The new structure will provide increased space for classrooms, labs and athletic facilities, and for leading- edge classroom technologies. The building will be near the Art Museum and Cranbrook Institute of Science, opening doors for more partnerships and hands-on science experience for the girls. When the building is completed, it will retain the name Kingswood, cre- ating an historical link to Kingswood School, which from 1932 to 1985 was the name of Cranbrook's school for Girls "Maintaining that link between the past and the present is important to us," Cummings said."We wanted the new building to bear the Kingswood name to help reinforce the bond among the generations of women who have shared the magic and the power of an all-girls' education!'s
