citizens, but actually tries to kill its
enemy's innocent civilians," Rabbi
Spolter said.
He suggests dealing with things
on a case-by-case basis.
"You can't preclude students
from expressing themselves and
identifying with organizations and
institutions that ally themselves
with the values of the United
States of America simply because
some students might-find that dis-
turbing," Rabbi Spolter said.

Trying Hard
Jamie Serman, assistant direc-
tor of the Anti-Defamation
League Michigan Region, says
the Bloomfield Hills district has
worked hard to bring a diverse
student population together.
"They have actively sought our
help with how their staff relates
to their students, how students
relate to staff and how students
relate to each other in the best
possible way:' Serman says, not-
ing that the district has conducted
both teacher and student anti-bias
training through the ADL's World
of Difference Institute.
Jon Frank, an active board
member of the American Jewish
Committee who has two children
at Andover and one in elementary
school, applauds the district's
policy.
"I think it is a well-thought-out
policy, and Dr. Gaynor should be
given credit to have the foresight
to address possible problems and
to alert parents that the district
would be sensitive to the par-
ents and the kids': Frank said. "I
think it's wise to do something in
advance rather than waiting for
something to happen."
Asked if the policy might sup-
press discussion out of an effort
to be sensitive, he said he didn't
think so.
"I think there will be active dis-
cussion because they will feel free
to address the issues in a way that
is safe for them."
Gaynor says he understands
concerns that sensitivity might
stifle honest discussion, and he
doesn't want that to happen. He
says the district is in "the initial
stages of planning something that
will assist students in having dis-
cussions on volatile topics without
becoming volatile. We are working
on what the next steps should
be."
