Rosh Hashanah
From Our Staff
and Residents

Dr

Jcrusalem/JT A— Israel's Arab sec-
tor is growing at a faster pace than
its Jewish counterpart, government
figures show.
According to Central Bureau of
Statistics data released ahead of Rosh
Hashanah, the Jewish population's
growth rate remained at roughly
1.5 percent; the Muslim population
growth rate dropped to 3 percent,
mainly due to a lower birth rate.
The report also stated that Jews
constitute 76 percent of Israel's
population, while Arabs constitute 20
percent.
The total Israeli population now
stands at around 6,990,700.

Hezbollah Plans
'Victory' Rally

Beirut/JTA — Hezbollah plans to
hold a rally celebrating its "victory"
over Israel.
Hezbollah's chief, Sheik Hassan
Nasrallah, announced this week that
his group would parade through
Beirut's devastated Shi'ite southern
district to celebrate what he described
as Israel's "defeat" in the recent
Lebanon war.
How the rally will be received by
mainstream Lebanese will be a gauge
of Hezbollah's postwar domestic
standing. Another test of Hezbollah's
confidence is whether Nasrallah him-
self will attend: The Hezbollah chief
has not appeared in public since the
war erupted July 12, for fear he could
be assassinated by Israel.

Hitler T-Shirt
Creates Controversy

Melbourne/JTA — Australian
Jewish leaders called on department
stores to stop selling a T-shirt that
features Hitler and Winston Churchill.
The shirt features the two men with
the words "paper v scissors" under-
neath them, a reference to a childhood
game.
Anton Block, a local Jewish leader,
said the shirt belittles the memory of
Holocaust victims.

We would like to wish all
our members and friends a

Palestinians Attack
Christian Churches

Ramallah/JTA — Palestinians
attacked churches in the West Bank
and Gaza Strip in revenge for the
pope's remarks on Islam.
There were no casualties in the
weekend arson and shooting attacks
against six churches. A previously
unknown group called the Sword of
Islam claimed responsibility.
The vigilantes threatened to esca-
late their actions to church bombings
unless Pope Benedict XVI apologizes
for a sermon last week in which he
appeared to endorse a Christian view
that early Islam was spread through
violence. The Vatican and the pope
have apologized.
Two of the attacked churches are
Roman Catholic. The rest are Greek
Orthodox or Anglican.

Israel Security
On Holiday Alert

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli security
forces were put on high alert for the
High Holidays. National police chief
Moshe Karadi said Monday that an
alert was declared following intelli-
gence that Palestinian terrorist groups
were planning attacks around Rosh
Hashanah.
Karadi also said security has been
beefed up around Israeli churches
for fear they could be attacked by
Muslims angry over Pope Benedict's
recent controversial comments on
Islam.
