showed a high
"CRP" value.
What is "CRP"
and can nutrition/diet play a role?
Thanks, Manuel.

nswer: Dear Manuel, CRP
is an acronym for C-Re-
._
active Protein, which is
a protein produced by the liver.
Because CRP tends to rise in the
presence of inflammation, it is con-
sidered a useful detection marker.

Some recent research suggests that
patients with elevated levels of
CRP, indicating chronic low-grade
inflammation, are at increased risk
for diabetes, hypertension and
cardiovascular disease. At
least one study has linked
high trans-fat intake to
elevated CRP levels.

No one is yet sure what
causes this type of in-
flammation, but proper
lifestyle and diet may
act to reduce inflamma-
tion and, correspond-
ingly, have a beneficial
impact on CRP levels.
Here's some recommenda-
tions that may prove helpful:

• If appropriate, lose weight
– excess fat cells may stimulate
inflammation;

• Reduce your trans fat intake;
• Cut down on heavily refined or
processed foods;

• Take vitamins B6/B12 and folate;
• Eat more high fiber foods, plant-
based foods, and foods rich in
omega-3 oils – good luck!
