Softball Strikeout?
Detroit's young Maccabi softball
team did well against older squads
last month at the Phoenix Games,
but the sport's future is cloudy. There
are plans to drop softball after the
2007 Maccabi Games and add girls
lacrosse.
"All the softball coaches got togeth-
er in Phoenix and talked about what
we can do," said Detroit coach Ron
Silberstein. "Participation in our
sport is increasing. There were seven
teams last year in San Antonio and
nine teams in Phoenix. We expect
even more teams next year." Detroit's
2006 roster reflects softball's trou-
bles. Of Detroit's 13 players, two were
from Baltimore and one from Albany,
N.Y., because those cities were unable
to field teams.
Detroit had only one 16-year-old
and four 15-year-olds in the corn-
petition for girls ages 13-16, and it
drew powerhouses Chicago and Los
Angeles in the preliminary round.
After losing 13-0 to Chicago and
beating St. Louis 10-4, Detroit faced
Los Angeles. An 11-4 victory for the
Californians gave L.A. a 100-0 career
record in Maccabi play.
"But it was our best game of the
competition:' Silberstein said. "We
played great defense and hit the ball
well."
Alex Siegel's first-inning triple
was the first hit allowed by Los
Angeles in Phoenix. Tracey Carroll
from Baltimore did a good job on
the mound for Detroit and Detroit's
Michelle Friedman was efficient
at shortstop. Detroit led 1-0 after the
first inning and was tied 3-3 after
three, but Los Angeles scored seven

After its loss to Los Angles, Detroit
fell 16-0 to Houston and beat Greater
Washington, D.C., 11-1. Chicago beat
Los Angeles 5-3 in the championship
game, ending Los Angeles' winning
streak at 102.
Other Detroit players were
Hannah Berman, Dayna
Elconin, Rachel Klisman, Mirele
