stie Greenberg is thrilled that
the High Holiday crowd at
the Chabad Jewish Center of
Commerce has grown too large for the
site where weekly Shabbat services are
held.
But the larger group — reaching 60
last year
warranted a search for a
temporary location to be used during
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
"Two years ago, we looked into
using any available empty space in
our area," said Greenberg, whose
husband is the synagogue's rabbi,
Schneor Greenberg."[Synagogue sup-
porter] Rusty Rosman, who is on the
Commerce Township zoning board
and is familiar with many builders
and store owners in the area, sug-
gested we contact Arkan Jonna, (of
A.F. Jonna Development in Bloomfield
Hills) who owns many shopping strips
in the area:'
Not only did Jonna come through
—
with a space, but, Greenberg said, "He
has been kind enough to let us use
it, free of charge. And he did it with a
smile."
Even this year with potential cus-
tomers looking to lease the space
Greenberg said he told her he would
hold off on the move-in date until
after the holidays. "Arkan is not Jewish
and the kindness he has shown is a
really beautiful example that no mat-
ter what religion you belong to, people
are willing to help each other and are
trying to change the world to make it
a better place," she said.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
services at the Chabad Jewish Center
of Commerce will be held at 120
Commerce Road, at the corner of
Commerce and Carroll Lake roads,
next to 7-Eleven.
For information on services and
programs at the synagogue, call Estie
Greenberg at (248) 363-3644. There is
no charge to attend the High Holiday
services, but reservations would be
appreciated.
