Volunteers for Israel:

Ed Kohl and Barbara

Cantor of West

Bloomfield, Alan Vosko

of Farmington Hills

and David Loeffler o

Oak Paac.

pay their own way to Israel as well
as weekends off-base.
"It's my heart," says Cantor,
explaining why she goes and why
she wears 19 bracelets, one for
each trip to Israel. Her trips are
even more special now that her
191/2-year-old grandson, Micha, has
made aliyah and has entered the
army.
"When the war broke out, I
said, `I have to go to Israel," Ed
Kohl said, echoing the others. So
two days before he and his wife,
Shelley, and his extended family
left on a Disney cruise to celebrate
their 25th wedding anniversary, he
booked a flight to Israel leaving a
few days after he returned.
Kohl, 67, of West Bloomfield, has
been so impressed with VFI, which
works with the Israeli Sara-El, that
now he is their national coordina-
tor, a volunteer position that over-
sees the activities and administra-
tion of its 10 regional offices.
He is humble about his own
participation, while praising others
who go.
"We all know Israel is a special
place, and VFI is special way to be
a part of it. You build strong bonds
with others and become like family,
and the people who go are fantas-
tic," he says, quickly adding, "but
don't say that about me."
