77C 71. 1, 7 arerrn" . 117 C arolyn and Randy Holloway loved to entertain. The problem was, with three growing children and a cramped combined family room and kitchen, they hardly had room for themselves, much less all of their friends. So, they called Gittleman Construction Company on an acquaintance's recommendation, and got the space they'd always wanted. Having only had a minor mudroom renovation before, the Holloway family had little idea what to expect when they proposed to add 560 sq. ft. to their home, turning the small, obsolete kitchen and family room into a hoses dream - "It made our home a lot more livable," said Randy. Even better was the level of customer service which is "Gittleman's special touch." Carolyn, in particular, was impressed - she had a household to run, and out of a basement, to boot. It was important to me, that they were there when they said they'd be there." And they were. The team was prompt and tidy, cleaning the workspace every day. Now the Holloways entertain comfortably in their new space, enjoying the company of family and friends in rooms designed with their specific needs in mind. "This was a large job, but they finished on time and on budget, and the end result was wonderful," said Randy. And Gittleman is welcome back to the Holloways' anytime. "I became friends with them," added Carolyn warmly. "They were so prompt, and so organized - very easy to get along with." Too bad the renovation's over. But when the time comes to expand your social itinerary, and your home along with it, you can count on Gittleman. JUST ASK THE HOLLOWAYS. A member of the Henry Ford Medical Group, Dr. Levy sees patients at Henry Ford Medical Center - West Bloomfield and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She participates in education in the community, notably an osteoporosis program at Daimler Chrysler. Born in Israel, Shiri Levy moved to the United States with her family when she was a small child. Her father was an endocrinologist, and as she grew up, she decided to follow in his footsteps. Although the majority of people with osteoporosis are women, Dr. Levy does see men with this disease. "The endocrine system involves glands which produce hormones to regulate various body functions," she explains. "Patients come to me with problems that include osteo- porosis, diabetes, and thyroid disorders." "Statistically, about one in five peo- ple with osteoporosis are male," she says. "It's frequently over- looked as a possible diagnosis in men." 1054320 Diabetes is a growing problem, and Dr. Levy notes that more children and teens are being diagnosed with Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. It's no longer unusual to see 15 to 17- year-olds with the disease, she - adds, although children as young as eight are sometimes diagnosed with it. The disease can be con- trolled for many people with diet and exercise, although medication is often necessary. "I've been seeing a lot of patients whose diabetes is difficult to control," she says. "I remember one particular patient who was very motivated to regain her health. She started on medica- tions, with proper diet and exer- cise, and lost 5o pounds. She is now off all medications and her diabetes is completely controlled by modifications she has made to her diet. "I'm a strong believer in preventive medicine, encouraging my patients to take control of their own health," says Dr. Levy. "I also strongly feel patients should be screened for signs of early osteoporosis. A good calcium supplement with vitamin D, and weight-bearing exercise, are crucial for good bone health." In addition to osteoporosis and diabetes, Dr. Levy is interested in thyroid disease. "Henry Ford has a comprehensive thyroid program, including sur- gery, at the West Bloomfield med- ical center," says Dr. Levy. "We now have a complete thyroid treat- ment center." Dr. Levy also participates in research, as well as teaching resi- dents and fellows. She has taken part in the West Bloomfield High School Medical Mentorship Program at Henry Ford. She and her husband live in Farmington Hills and are affiliated with Congregation Adat Shalom.
