Classy And Classic
Sweet Georgia Brown has earned its place among downtown dining legends.
W
hen first opened, it
was acclaimed as
Detroit's answer to
the warm, intimate upscale din-
ing spots of New York, Chicago
and Los Angeles.
This reputation — further
enhanced by renovated decor and
more exotic culinary presenta-
tions — has made Sweet Georgia
Brown on Brush near Lafayette in
Detroit's Greektown a true desti-
nation restaurant of rare quality.
So much so that suburban
folks, together with those from
all areas of the state, have hon-
ored it as a nonstop objective
for everything that is good in an
upscale restaurant ... One with
food that Les and Sam Gruber
and Joe Wolfe years ago would
have been proud to have Chef
Pancho Valez prepare for ser-
vice at their wonderful London
Chop House ... or that Joe Beyer
would have boasted about at his
Pontchartrain Wine Cellars ...
among the legends that, at one
time, gave Detroit a fine gastro-
nomical reputation as described
by the great James Beard.
Add Sweet Georgia Brown as
one of the finest restaurants to
come this way in many years and
certainly an excellent addition to
the grand list of yesteryear din-
ing places boasted of in Detroit
... Owners, like classy dressers
and personable gentlemen Frank
Taylor and Derrick Coleman, with
talented partner, Executive Chef
Jerry Nottage, have much reason
to be highly pleased with their
Sweet Georgia Brown.
Splendid servers whose obvi-
ous training puts them in a
highly select class, politely and
efficiently present Jerry's superb
dishes, like some of the finest
short ribs that many people have
yet seen ... Short ribs for which
people from the furthest regions
are coming, available presently
only on Friday and Saturday, but
on request with a day's notice ...
A goodness due to slow-roast-
ing for four hours in its juices,
vegetables and herbs, giving the
dish extreme tenderness and
super taste with a very low fatty
consistency.
A world-class restaurant must
have a superlative executive chef,
and Jerry Nottage, also executive
concept chef for all the Southern
Hospitality Restaurant Group's
properties, is one of this region's
best and spends his evenings in
the Sweet Georgia Brown kitchen.
He is a true culinary innovator,
with items not on the menu like
his sea bass special atop a Creole
dirty rice mound, surrounded
with pieces of lobster and jumbo
crab; the delicious large appetizer
of two whole artichokes, not just
the choke, lightly covered with a
sesame bread crumb and stuffed
with brie and ricotta; and a pas-
trami-smoked salmon appetizer
that defies the imagination.
No forgetting Jerry's signature
dish, his fried lobster creation
