I think Berl Falbaum trivializes our
disdain for President Bush in his
Community View ("The Case For
Bush," Aug. 31, page 39). He suggests
that our lack of support reflects that
we automatically support Democrats
(he's almost right, we faithfully support
democratic ideals) or because of what
he refers to as support for trivial social
issues compared with the survival of
Israel.
Jews maybe disdain President Bush
because:
• He tramples on individual free-
doms, allows torture of suspected
enemies, invaded Iraq (resulting in
more terrorists and a distraction from
fighting terrorists), and wasted our
resources so we can't deal with North
Korea or Iran, which represents an
enormous risk to Israel.
• His arrogance has lost us the sup-
port of the rest of the world — support
so critical to the war on terrorism, to
achieving peace for Israel, to ending
genocide in Darfur, and to addressing
the issues with Iran and North Korea.
• He has put tax cuts for the wealthy
above programs to address health care
for all and assistance for those less
fortunate and because he puts support
for business above protecting the envi-
ronment.
• He has put his religious views above
those of the nation in not supporting
broader stem cell research to find cures
for horrible diseases.
The bottom line is that Jews know
President Bush does not embrace
Jewish values nor American values,
which are so critical to our and Israel's
ultimate survival. Under President
Bush, the United States is not a light
unto the nations.

In his Community View "The Case For
Bush" (Aug. 31, page 39), Berl Falbuam
notes that President Bush "probably is
the greatest supporter of Israel ever to
occupy the White House." He mentions
several times that Jews tend to vote
Democrat and suggests that Jews "might
consider being more independent"
I agree that Jews should vote inde-
pendently, which is what we as Jews do
when we vote for a Democratic candi-
date whose stand on issues like abor-
tion, stem cell research and civil rights
mirrors our own.
There is more to being the president
of the United States than staunch sup-
port of Israel. There are issues such

as nominating Supreme Court jus-
tices, caring for the environment and
decreasing our dependence on Middle
East oil.
Democratic candidates believe in a
separation of church and state.
The Bush administration sent thou-
sands of brave men and women to die
in an ill-conceived war for which they
had no plan going in and no plan to
get out. This administration has mort-
gaged the future of our children and
grandchildren.
Jewish voters need to continue to see
the big picture when voting for rep-
resentation in government. Of course
Israel is important, but it should not be
the only issue one considers when step-
ping into the voting booth.

9-11 Imagery

The shocking events of 9-11
changed us all. Every time I enter our
family room, I see among the many
family pictures one taking me back to
the Twin Towers of the World Trade
Center in New York — a picture of my
husband and I seated at a table in the
company of our sons and their lovely
significant others as we celebrated
our 40th wedding anniversary two
years before. The restaurant where
this happy photograph was taken was
called Windows on the World, situated
up high in one of the Twin Towers.
I saw the Twin Towers two weeks
before 9-11 as we came to New York
again to celebrate the 40th birthday of
our son, Alon.
In his autobiography "A Tale of
Love and Darkness," Israeli author
Amos Oz recounts how growing up
in Jerusalem, he used to like to replay
famous Jewish wars while changing
their outcome, obviously to favor the
Jews.
Each time I look at that happy
Windows on the World picture, I
imagine that somehow this beautiful
image is frozen in time — everything
is still there and the chilling date of 9-
11 had never arrived.

Clarification

• Another Jewish candidate has
made it to the Nov. 7 general election
("Novembert Vote," Aug. 31, page 36)
State Rep. Steve Tobocman won the
Democratic primary and the right to
seek re-election in the 12th State House
District in Detroit.
