ibrant greens, yellows and
purples popped in the backyard
garden of Carolyn and Hugh
Greenberg of Franklin — a beautiful
setting for a gathering where the spirit of
giving simply bloomed.
The Greenbergs hosted more than 150
members of the Generations Society —
donors who contribute $100,000 or more to
any permanently endowed fund, planned
gift or capital gift that benefits the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit or any
of its agencies.
The meeting, held Aug. 30, was meant to
thank the distinguished donors for their
generous support. Participants were invited
to bring their adult children to promote the
idea of inter-generational philanthropy
"The concept of generations really reso-
nates with the Greenberg family," said host-
ess Carolyn Greenberg. "We have
a long tradition and our children
are carrying it on and we're very
proud."
"This is an absolute necessity for
the continuation of the community
and the strength of the community
for years to come," added Hugh
Greenberg. "The problems of our
community and the responsibili-
ties are not ending. They're getting
more and more critical with the
way the world is going — so, we
have to stick together."
Guests enjoyed dinner outside among
the gardens and gathered under a tent for a
short program where 46 new Generations
Society members were inducted. Each
new member received a framed piece of
artwork by Israeli artist Enya Keshet as
a token of appreciation. The event was
sponsored by LaSalle Bank, which recently
renewed a three-year commitment to
Federation's annual campaign.
"This is our most esteemed group of
donors and we wanted a chance to say
thank you, and to show our appreciation':
said Stacey Crane of Farmington Hills,
Federation's director of endowments.
"The group of people here tonight
has always risen to the occasion," said
Federation president Peter Alter of

Bloomfield Hills.
Alter told the crowd that Metro Detroit's
Jewish community has raised $24.6 million
so far for Federation's Israel Emergency
Fund. Nationwide, the goal is to raise $1
billion to help Israel rebuild after the recent
conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"I like the idea that for generations going
forward my small contribution will hope-
fully have continuing importance," said
newly inducted Generation Society mem-
ber Chuck Nida of West Bloomfield.
"It's amazing," said Crane as she looked
out at the crowd. "Seeing the people here
and the amount of funds it represents just
proves once again how important Jewish
philanthropy is to this community."
