Lowell R. Schmeltz, M.D. to their practice. Dr. Schmeltz
specializes in thyroid, pituitary, adrenal disorders,
osteoporosis, and diabetes. Dr. Schmeltz received his
medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh
School of Medicine and completed his Internal
Medicine and Endocrinology training at the Feinberg
School of Medicine of Northwestern University in
Chicago, Illinois, where he published on multiple
endocrine topics. He has additional certification in
thyroid ultrasonography, ultrasound-guided thyroid
biopsy and bone densitometry.

t didn't take long for a group of
local musicians to decide the
best way to honor the memory
of their friend Jeff Grey — who died
July 17 — would be to showcase his
life through the music that was his
passion.
After Jeff died — when a tree fell
on his tent during a Tamarack Camps
trip he supervised as director of Camp
Kennedy — plans for a tribute con-
cert were begun. The musical gather-
ing will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 9, at Xhedos Cafe in Ferndale,
where Jeff played guitar and sang fre-
quently since he was in high school.
Jeff would have turned 27 on Sept.
10. The event is planned as a "celebra-
tion of his life according to close
friend and music manager Jason
McCaffrey of Ferndale.

"There will be eight musical acts by
a bunch of Jeff's best friends and one
of his campers, and an open mic time
for others who want to be part of it:'
McCaffrey said.
According to Jeff's sister, Rachel
Grey Ellis of Oak Park, "Some are
playing Jeff's music; some are playing
music they wrote about Jeff; others are
playing songs by famous musicians
that Jeff liked to sing."

owned by Jeff and those provided by
his family and friends will be edited
by McCaffrey, a filmmaker who also
works as a videographer at Mayer
Creative Video in West Bloomfield,
whose owner, David Mayer, will donate
the use of projection equipment for
the concert.
The event, suggested by Xhedos'
owner Caleb Grayson and organized
by McCaffrey, "is for friends, family,
campers and anyone who wants to
hear good music and pay tribute to
my brother," Rachel Ellis said.

Musician Deep-Down
Jeff Grey was a singer and songwriter
who wrote, produced and recorded
on four self-released solo CDs. "And
he played very intense rhythm guitar,"
McCaffrey added.
Playing guitar since he was 13, Jeff
recorded his first album as a teenager,
later working out of a basement stu-
dio he built for himself at home. He
continued his musical career while
earning his undergraduate degree in
business at Michigan State University
and during a junior year abroad at
Tel Aviv University. He performed in
eight countries that year while travel-
ing with friend and fellow musician
Mike Shapiro, a former Detroiter now
of Denver, who also will be part of the
tribute concert.
Locally, Jeff performed his alterna-
tive rock music at coffee houses and
clubs as a solo act and with fellow
singer-guitar player Ryan Hertz of
Ferndale.
Most recently, he focused on com-
pleting a CD, almost ready for release,
with the Red Sea Station band.
