nounced award presented to him
and ex-wife Kay Siblani, executive
editor of the News.
Siblani charged, "No one is
allowed to speak about our foreign
policy in this country" because they
are called anti-Semitic. He said he
has been "subjected to a campaign
of defamation and distortion" by
Nolan Finley, editorial page editor
of the Detroit News, but pledged,
"There isn't a force on the face of
this world that will prevent us from
standing up and telling the truth."
Explaining that the congressional
honorees would not be attend-
ing, master of ceremonies Noura
Erakat, a national grassroots orga-
nizer and legal advocate of the U.S.
Campaign, suggested that neither
Kilpatrick nor Conyers had the
courage to attend.
"Regrettably, they can't be with
us here tonight due to 'scheduling
issues," Erakat said, eliciting mur-
murs in the audience. "And I'm sure
we've all heard that before with
our advocacy efforts ... so I want
to encourage you all, being from
Michigan, to help them find the
courage to be here tonight."
A thank-you note from Kilpatrick
was read, and Conyers, who had
only been added as a recipient the
week before the conference, had
never committed to attending.
Neither could be reached for corn-
ment.
Before the awards were presented
in their absence, actor Danny
Glover spoke of his personal rela-
tionship with the late Palestinian
American academic and activist
Edward Said. After telling the audi-
ence "how proud I am to be here
he spoke of Said in personal terms,
eschewing any overt political state-
ments.
Featured keynote speaker Diana
Buttu, a former legal adviser to the
Palestine Liberation Organization,
could not attend for medical
reasons, but sent videotaped
