of ourselves; but we must also
remember to care for ourselves.
This is especially true when it comes to
heart disease.
Did you know that twice as many
women will die of heart disease as men?
That more women die from heart disease
than cancer? Women are apt to push the
men in their lives to go to a doctor, but
might not be as
proactive to visit
a physician them-
selves.
Ironically,
women often
attribute their
own heart symp-
toms to stress.
However, heart

The most

important insight
to gain is that
heart disease — in both men and women
— is preventable. Yet only 5 percent of
women do what they should to lessen
their risk for this disease.
Here are some facts to consider from
the American Heart Association:
• Heart disease is the leading killer of

American women, proving fatal each year
for more than five times as many women
as breast cancer.
•More than 230,000 women die from
heart disease each year, and nearly 20,000
of these victims are younger than 65 years
old.
• Nearly 13 percent of women age 45
and older have had a heart attack.
• Nearly 4 million women experience
chest pain.
•A first heart attack will more likely kill
a woman than a man, and 42 percent of
women who have heart attacks die within
a year, compared to 24 percent of men.
•Women are almost twice as likely to
die following heart bypass surgery than
men.
Women need to take these statistics to
heart. With early treatment, preventive
health care and a proper daily regimen
of exercise and healthy habits, women
and their loved ones can prevent heart
disease. Ci
