etary Guide for Americans 2005,
which makes, among others, the
following 2 recommendations (spe-
cial dietary needs may vary):
• Consume less than 10% of
calories from saturated fats
and less than 300 mg/day of
cholesterol; minimize trans
fatty acids; and

• Keep total fat intake
between 20 - 25% of
calories, with most be-
ing polyunsaturated and
t, monounsaturated fats
/// such as fish, nuts, and
/ vegetable oils.
The Nutrition Facts label's
% Daily Value is based on a 2000
calorie/day diet, which can be mis-
leading if you're a on a different
regimen (e.g., 1500 calories/day).

Use this method to convert the %
Daily Value (% DV) to your caloric
intake base: First, divide your
target daily calories by 2000 (e.g.,
1500 ± 2000 = .75); then divide the
listed % DV by that result (e.g.,
15% DV ± .75 = 20% DV). In our
example, a listed % DV of 15%
is actually 20% for someone on a
1500 calories/day diet.

Still confused? More next time.
