A nationally known engineering consultant in the food warehousing industry, Mr. Freund was a World War II veteran and taught fly- ing. The secretary for the first and sec- ond graduating classes of Cranbrook, he was also a longtime member of Temple Beth El. Mr. Freund is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Suzy Freund of San Diego, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Meredith and Howard West of Laupahoehoe, Hawaii, Frances and Kenneth Steinman of Birmingham, Patricia and Kenyon Olds of West Bloomfield; grandchildren, Casandra Olds, Jamie and Thomas Donagrandi, Joshua Steinman, Amy Steinman and Lauren Freund; great-granddaughter, Adriana Donagrandi. SYDNEY ELDERT GARTENBERG, died Aug. 7, 2006. He was born in New York in 1940 and graduated from City College of New York, receiving his master's degree in busi ness from Wayne State University. He was a mem- ber of MENSA. Mr. Gartenberg served as a second lieu- Gartenberg tenant in the first infantry, stationed in Germany in the1960s. He later trained as a stockbroker and securities adviser for E.F. Hutton and began his own insurance consult- ing company, Group Benefit Plans of Farmington Hills. He was a devoted Zionist who trav- eled frequently to Israel. His family supported and built Natanya and as a youth, he smuggled guns to the yeshiva in his school bag to be used in Israel's War for Independence; he was a member of the Betar Youth. He was also a member of B'nai Brith, Shaarey Zedek Men's Club, Jewish War Veterans, Congregation Beth Shalom and Jewish Federation. Mr. Gartenberg is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Elissa, Randi and Lori; son-in-law, Larry; twin grandchildren, Hannah Brooke and Joshua Ryan; brother and sister-in- law, Martin and Shelley Gartenberg; sister, Susan Gartenberg; brothers-in- law and sisters-in-law, Dr. David and Keirsten Schwartz, Robert and Linda Schwartz; nieces, nephews and cous- ins. He was the son of the late Marsha and the late Joseph Gartenberg; son- in-law of the late Betty Schwartz.
