ness based in
America with a
presence on five
continents. His
wife, Rory, works
closely with him.
The fashion leader,
who believes cloth-
ing should be quieter
than the woman
so her true beauty
shines through,
answered ques-
tions for the
Jewish News as
a prelude to his
visit:

JN: How did
you choose the items to be
shown at Fash Bash?
ET: We selected items from our fall

collection — everything from casual
to dressy. The women's collection is
inspired by the grace and fluidity of
the 1930s and a feminine interpreta-
tion of the 1940s menswear. The men's
collection is inspired by both the chic
style of Manhattan and the casual ele-
ment of L.A.

JN: Why did you
pick Detroit to
showcase your
new men's
line, and how
will this line
complement
what you are
presenting
for women?
ET: Over the

years, Detroit has
been a constant
influence in the cul-
tural landscape of
America. That said,
we felt it was impor-
tant for the people
of Detroit to see our new
men's collection. It is
through the success of
the women's collection
that I have been given
the opportunity to
explore menswear.
Both collections are
about dressing with complete freedom
and individuality any time of day or
for any occasion.

JN: How does a rooftop,
the locale of Fash Bash,
compare dramatically with
other places you have had
fashion shows?

ET: We're really excited about

the rooftop locale since we have
never shown outdoors before.

JN: Where do you turn
for inspiration as you
come up with new fashions
for men?
ET: I look at the varied demands

of the modern, urban lifestyle of
the contemporary man and try to
create clothing that will suit his
needs. A man should be polished
but casual and comfortable at the
same time.

JN: Was there one
item or group of items
that became the turn-
ing point in the success of
your career?
ET: When I created the tube top, it

Call

became an overnight success. In many
ways, I feel it launched my career.
The 1970s was an exciting time to be
in New York, and the club scene was
at its height. I was young and full of
ideas, many of which came from those
nights.
