A

month ago, Karen Alpiner
of Franklin was in war-torn
Israel on the United Jewish
Communities Solidarity Mission.
"I came back from Israel and it
occurred to me: 'What kind of dia-
logue were kids having about Israel?
What are we doing to address the
issue of Israel with teens and youth?'
I asked and found there were no pro-
grams. I decided there should be one."
And now there will be. "Shout Out
For Israel," a teen community event,
will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27,
at the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. The event will be an
outlet for support for Israel and also
feature a battle of Jewish teen bands.
"It's a total community event; really
a teen-driven initiative with guidance
and support from area groups and
agencies," Alpiner explained after a
steering committee meeting last week
attended by 15 teens.
"We were given little bios about
speakers and we were the ones who
chose the speaker," said Hannah
Farkas, 17, of West Bloomfield. "We
also decided that there should be col-
lege students there as advisers for us
to ask questions and get information
and opinions.
"And we thought it'd be more effec-
tive if the rally had mainly teens and
young adults. If we're forced by par-
ents to get involved, we might not feel
as strongly as if we do it voluntarily."
The teens also wanted a tzedakah
component and suggested Federation's
Israel Emergency Fund. A teen fund-
raising drive is being spearheaded by
Teen Mission 2006 participants, so
this was seen as very appropriate and
necessary for this event, Alpiner said.
"It's important that teens get
involved with Israel," said Farkas, who
participated in Teen Mission 2006.

" \Ale are the next generation. For Israel
to survive, we need to fight for it.
"Teens in this area, especially those
who went to Israel, should try to pro-
mote Israel. They have visited Israel
and have a better understanding of
the land and its history. They should
get all their people to join in the rally."
Yair Hillman, 17, of Southfield, also
on the committee, agrees the rally is a
good opportunity for advocacy.
"I feel this teen rally is very impor-
tant because it creates an atmosphere
for teenage Jews from all backgrounds
to join together for a Jewish cause
said Hillman, who is regional presi-
dent of the National Conference of
Synagogue Youth. "Additionally, this
rally will help educate teens about
the situation in Israel and how they
can help through rallies, fundraisers,
sending letters to government officials
and visiting Israel."
Alpiner was impressed by the
enthusiasm of the steering committee.
"I asked if they would be open to
continuing as a teen advocacy group
after the event and they were excited
and wanted other teens to be able to
sign up," she said. "One of the things
I want to make sure is that this is a
true community event, with all seg-
ments included and having a voice,"
she said, adding that teen involvement
is coming from all local youth groups,
Reform to Orthodox, and day schools.
Teens are spreading the word by
sending e-mails to friends and passing
out flyers, assuring friends this is for
teens only — no parents are invited.
