Technion Emergency
Fund To Aid Students

With a cease-fire along the Israel-
Lebanon border, the Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology now faces the
task of resuming activities put on hold
during the war.
During the war, a large number
of the university's 13,000 students
— a larger percentage than any other
Israeli university — were called into
the IDF reserves. Final exams were
postponed until September because
of the rockets fired at Haifa. With the
city's businesses largely shuttered,
many students lost employment.
The American Technion Society
(ATS) has created the the Max Gill
Emergency Fund for Technion
Students to help students cope with
the financial hardships, academic
interruptions and the emotional and

psychological traumas of the war. The
Detroit chapter has named this fund
in memory of Max Gill, who was the
East Central regional director.
"Help is needed to provide emo-
tional and financial support to stu-
dents whose lives have been turned
upside down by the war," said Scott
Leemaster, ATS Detroit chapter presi-
dent.
For information on the Max Gill
Technion Student Emergency Fund,
call the ATS Detroit office, (248) 737-
1990. Direct contributions may be
made on the ATS Web site, http://sup-
port.ats.org/students, or a check can
be mailed to: the American Technion
Society, 32506 Northwestern Highway,
Farmington Hills, MI 48334.

Israeli Calls War A Victory
The Israeli army's
Jerusalem/JTA

—

chief of staff declared Israel's war with
Lebanon a victory. But Cabinet mem-
bers suggested the results were murky
at best.
Lt. Gen Dan Halutz told the Cabinet
on Sunday that Israel had won the war
on "points" even if there had been no
"knockout." Halutz pointed to Israel's
damage to the Hezbollah infrastruc-
ture as evidence.
Cabinet ministers, however, pointed
out that Hezbollah's prestige within
the Arab world had soared and that
Iran and Syria remained committed
supporters of the group. Also, Israel
failed to win the release of two sol-
diers kidnapped by Hezbollah, the
ministers said.

Hezbollah Had Russian Arms
Israel complained
Jerusalem/JTA

—

to Russia that Russian-made anti-tank
missiles reached Hezbollah fighters,
who used them with devastating effect
against Israeli troops.
An Israeli delegation traveled to
Moscow earlier this week to deliver
the complaint, Ha'aretz reported. The
anti-tank missiles proved to be one
of Hezbollah's most effective weapons
in the monthlong war in Lebanon,
responsible for the deaths of at least
50 of the 118 Israeli soldiers killed in
the fighting.
Israel protested when Russia sold
advanced weapons to Syria, warn-
ing that they would be forwarded to

Hezbollah, but Russia dismissed the
concerns.
A Russian Foreign Ministry spokes-
man said it was "impossible" that
Russian weapons could have reached
Hezbollah.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge: As one
local Arab community com-
mentator stated last week in a
Detroit newspaper, "Israel talks
peace but makes war."

The Answer: In the
latest conflict with Hezbollah,
Israel responded to an unpro
voked border raid that killed
Israeli soldiers and kidnapped
two. Regarding the Palestinians,
Israel has agreed to every
peace proposal, ceasefire and
international mediation. Israel
has withdrawn from captured
territory, taken other risks
for peace against the advice
of its military leadership and
responded to humanitarian
issues on enemy territory even
in the heat of war.
