Restaurant Glorifies Hitler

Bornbay/JTA — A new restaurant
in India is named after Hitler and
has swastikas on its walls. The owner
of the Hitler's Cross in Bombay said
he just wanted to stand out from the
crowd. India's Jewish community is
protesting the name.

Young Quits Wal-Mart
Atlanta/JTA — Andrew Young
resigned as a Wal-Mart advocate after
disparaging Jewish, Arab and Korean
shop owners.
A former U.S. ambassador to the
United Nations and mayor of Atlanta,
Young resigned as head of "Working
Families for Wal-Mart," and apolo-
gized. The Los Angeles Sentinel, a black
newspaper, asked Young how he could
advocate for an organization that dis-
places "mom-and-pop" outfits. Young
said he was pleased when those stores
were "run out" of his neighborhood.
"Those are the people who have
been overcharging us — selling us
stale bread and bad meat and wilted
vegetables',' he said. "And they sold out
and moved to Florida. I think they've
ripped off our communities enough.
"First it was Jews; then it was
Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few
black people own these stores."

Israel Freezes Withdrawals

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's govern-
ment halted plans to pull out from
parts of the West Bank. Israeli officials
confirmed a report in the Aug. 18
Ha'aretz that Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert for now has shelved the plan
to unilaterally set Israel's borders by
pulling out troops and dismantling
West Bank settlements.
The plan lost favor in the wake of
Israel's war in Lebanon. Israel's uni-
lateral withdrawals from Lebanon in
2000 and Gaza last year did not stop
rocket attacks and cross-border raids,
but only brought the attackers closer.
"It is my assessment the prime
minister will not deal with this in the
coming period because it's really not
on the agenda:' Housing Minister Meir
Sheetrit told Israel's Army Radio.

Lamont Dines With Peres
New York/JTA — Ned Lamont,
Connecticut's Democratic candidate
for U.S. Senate, dined with Shimon
Peres last week.
Lamont, who defeated Sen. Joe
Lieberman in an Aug. 8 primary,
attended a private dinner with the
Israeli deputy prime minister hosted
Aug. 15 in New York City by a mutual
friend. The two talked about the situ-
ation in the Middle East and options
for moving forward, said Tom Swan,
Lamont's campaign manager. "I know
that Ned was trying to get Peres' per-
ception on the current state of affairs
in the Middle East and the appropriate
role for a senator to play),' Swan said.
Republican Jewish activists have
attacked Lamont for his association with
Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson
and have alleged that his support comes
from the wing of the Democratic
Party least friendly to Israel.

War in Gaza and Lebanon
Has Changed Everything!

Rabbi Sherwin Wine

will discuss

Israel, Syria and Iran

A

Israel's defiant response in July is a message to Hamas

and Hizbollah. But it is especially a message to the two

Shiite powers that make it possible for Hamas and

Suit Filed In JCC Shooting

Hizbollah to exist, Syria and Iran. The growing power of

Los Angeles/JTA — Families of the
victims of the 1999 Jewish commu-
nity center shooting in Los Angeles
are suing the state of Washington for
allegedly failing to supervise the man
who committed the crime.
The $15 million lawsuit filed Aug.
15 says the state's Department of
Corrections failed to adequately moni-
tor Buford Furrow Jr., an ex-convict on
probation from a Washington state jail.
On Aug. 10, 1999, Furrow burst into
the North Valley Jewish Community
Center and opened fire. He wounded
two boys, a teenager and a reception-
ist, and killed a Filipino-American let-
ter carrier. He is serving a life sentence
without possibility of parole.

Iran and its ambition to lead the Muslim world terrifies

America and Israel, especially since the war in Iraq gave

power to the Iraqi Shiites. Can Israel find Sunni allies in

the Muslim world? Will rockets allow her to evacuate the

West Bank? What will happen?
