former Eric Gutman of Livonia, who
will head to San Francisco after the
show's run to be in the first road com-
pany of Jersey Boys, the 2006 Tony
Award-winning Broadway musical.
Fred Buchalter of Troy is the other
Jewish cast member.
Other performers include Catherine
Lutz of Howell and Matthew Stewart
and Leah Smith of Detroit. Director is
Kayla Gordon of Winnipeg and musi-
cal director is Marty Mandelbaum of
Oak Park.
"My biggest challenge was cast-
ing performers who are triple threats
— who can act, sing and dance," said
Gordon, a teacher in the University
of Winnipeg's theater department
who has been directing shows around
Canada and the U.S. for 20 years.
"But we succeeded; it's a terrific
cast. The production is sort of autobi-
ographical of Sherman, and it fits the
retro style of today — a throwback
to the 1960s. It's a show for all ages:
shticky but clever."
When Gordon first directed Hello
Muddah, Hello Fadduh in Canada
several years ago, one of the stars,
in his pre-cantor days, was Michael
Smolash, now cantor at Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield.
