Making Dreams

H

arry Granader rode
the fast-food wave to
great wealth, but, with
his wife, Sylvia, worked just as
hard to give as much back to ill
children.
Mr. Granader, 90, of Beverly
Hills, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006,
at the Montana ranch and camp
he founded for children with
. cancer.
He was buried at the ranch
Aug. 8; and a local memorial ser-
vice will be held 3 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 13, at Temple Beth El,
Bloomfield Township.
Mr. Granader was an All-
City football player at Detroit
Central High School and earned
a football scholarship to Wayne
University. But World War II
intervened, and he became a
Navy air cadet.
After the war, he started Great
Lakes Lumber and Supply Co.
and Bond-Bilt Construction.
He then became a franchisee
of McDonald Restaurants and
owner of seven restaurants in the
Downriver area.
In later years, he helped build

the Ronald McDonald House
in Detroit next to Children's
Hospital of Michigan and one
in Ann Arbor next to Mott
Children's Hospital.
After visiting the children at
the hospitals on a regular basis,
he founded Camp Mak-A-Dream
in Montana.
The Granaders purchased the
10,000-acre ranch in Gold Creek
to build a tranquil, cost-free
place for children with cancer.
The camp, now in its 12th year,
has served more than 3,000
children and young adults from
around the world.
Mr. Granader helped build
Congregation Beth Shalom in
Oak Park and was its fourth pres-
ident. He and Sylvia earned the
Senior Adult Jewish Hall of Fame
Eight Over Eighty Award. The
Granaders were active members
at Temple Beth El.
Mr. Granader is survived
by his loving wife of 62 years,
Sylvia Granader; sons, Dr. Neil
(Louise) Granader, Dr. Larry

Alan (Judy) Granader, Dan

daughter, Elizabeth (Ira)
Levy; grandchildren

the late Pearl Shoshkis;
brother-in-law of the late

Interment was at the
ranch in Montana. A local
memorial service will
be held 3 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 13, at Temple Beth

ROSALYN BELKIN, 92, of
Southfield, died Aug. 3, 2006
She is survived by a brother
and sister-in-law, Jay and Shirley
Handelsman of La Mesa Calif.;

Robert and Pat Pasick. She was the
beloved wife of the late Murray
Belkin; dear sister of the late Ethel
Handelsman.

SOPHIE FORDON, 93, of
Traverse City, died Aug. 4, 2006. A
prominent artist and art teacher,
Mrs. Fordon had her own studio
and traveled the world for her art.
She is survived by daughters
and sons-in-law, Marjory and
Bernard Fenner of Rancho
Santa Fe, Calif., Paula and Victor
Skuratowicz of Oregon, Alice
Hansen of Traverse City; nine
grandchildren; 11 great-grand-
children; brother and his part-
ner, Joseph Gifford and Talbot
Waterman of Boston, Mass.; broth-
er and sister-in-law, Carl and Myra
Gornbein of West Bloomfield; sis-
ter-in-law, Reva Gornbein. She was

GEORGE FRIEDMAN, 86,
of West Bloomfield, died Aug. 6,
2006. The retired president of
Barsteel, a steel warehouse com-
pany in Detroit, Cincinnati and
Toledo, he was also a board mem-
ber of Adat Shalom Synagogue
and the Jewish Community Center.
Mr. Friedman was a captain in
the Army during World War II, an
adviser for Federation and a mem-
ber of B'nai B'rith.
He is survived by his wife -of 63
years, Harriet Friedman of West
Bloomfield; son and daughter-in-
law, Leo and Susan Friedman of
Okemos; daughter and son-in-law
Jody and Dr. Marshall Sack of
West Bloomfield; grandchildren,
Geoffrey and Anna Sack. He was

the beloved brother and brother-
in-law of the late Molly and the
late Harry Gale.
Interment at Adat Shalom

RACHELLE "SHELLEY"
(SLAVIN) GORDON, 56,
and her husband, MARK LEE
GORDON, 55, tragically died
in a house fire on July 29, 2006, at
their residence in Chicago.
Shelley, a native of Detroit, was a
teacher, educator and community
leader. Mark was a lawyer, special-
izing in information technology
law. They met as undergraduates
at the University of Michigan.
They are survived by their

beloved son, Michael. Shelley is
the daughter of the late Harry and
the late Ruth Slavin; sister of Roy
(Melba) Slavin. Mark is the son of
Betty (Levy) and George Gordon;
brother of Rita. Both are also sur-
vived by aunts and uncles, Sidney
and Doris Slavin, Marilyn and
Norman Schakne, Doris Kaplow,
Aledia Levy; nephews and nieces,
Scott and Seal Slavin, and Jennifer
Kunkle; countless cousins, friends
and colleagues. They were the
nephew and niece of the late Paul
Levy and the late Bernard Levy.

STEWART M. KEPES, 76, of
West Bloomfield, died Aug. 2, 2006.
Prior to retirement 10 years ago,
he was the owner of Auto City
Heating, a family operated heating
and air conditioning contracting
business. He also sold insurance
