OPEN SATURDAYS

Exceptional Remodeling & Granite and Stone Company LLC

When we moved into our new home we
- wanted our basement finished before the
winter, giving our two young sons a place
of their own during the cold months. We
envisioned a complete kitchen, full bath-
room, bedroom, large play area and plenty of
storage. We interviewed several contractors
and decided to go with the BEST company
whose ideas and presentation of the construc-
tion plans were most innovative and exciting.
We chose Ben Lanxner of Benjamin Homes
for his excellent building reputation. Ben's
all-inclusive package price was.well within
our budget and he promised our entire job
would be completed in 6 weeks. During the
process, our lives were not interrupted at •
all His crew were diligent, professional and
courteous. We loved walking downstairs each
evening to see the day's progress. Ben timed the entire project perfectly. In 5 weeks,
6 days our basement was beautifully finished. No problems. No delays. No hassles.
We would do it all over again. Our basement is truly an extension of our warm
home. We were lucky to have found Ben and you will be too!

A Jewish Paper?
After reading the Aug. 3 letter "IN
Owes Apology" (page 6), the only apol-
ogy owed is to Rabbi Reuven Spolter
for the JN's publishing of a letter so
disrespectful of his position.
Rabbi Spolter didn't make his com-
ment in the Arts & Entertainment,
Food, Metro or even the Opinion sec-
tion. He wrote a very appropriate article
for the Torah portion section (July 20,
page 46). I am sure Rabbi Spolter would
never espouse harm or bigotry toward
homosexuals. However, the Torah does
object to the "practice" of being gay.
It was not Rabbi Spolter who passed
judgment on that "practice." Like it or
not, it was passed by God in the Torah,
thus making it appropriate for the
Torah portion section.
Publicly touting gay relationships
is not a Jewish ideal and should have
no place in the Jewish News. As the
Aug. 3 letter writers pointed out, other
issues should be of concern as well,
such as the eating of shrimp and the
like. I guess the JN feels flaunting
homosexuality would not be any worse
than promoting restaurants that serve
shrimp and other non-kosher foods.
Neither is accepted by the Torah.
Many IN readers seem to be look-
ing for a community paper rather
than a Jewish paper and wish to take
"Jewish" out of the publication. Don't
criticize Rabbi Spolter's attempt to put
the "Jewish" back in the publication.

Diversity Matters

Thank you for taking the correct and
bold step by now including marriage-
union announcements by all individu-
als •— including gay and lesbian Jews.
This is truly in the spirit of klal Yisrael
[the Jewish people]. And it is a source
of great pride. We must recognize that
the Jewish News is the paper of the
whole Jewish community — diversity
and all. Diversity makes us a stronger
and richer community.
For the younger readers, these pub-
lished same-sex announcements send
a very important message: All Jews
are part of our community and fam-
ily, regardless of movement affiliation,
orientation, etc. In this inclusion, we find
strength, character and community.
Yasher koach [go forth in strength]
to the JN for upholding their sacred
responsibility to the community; at
the same time, yasher koach to con-
gregations and clergy who also serve
and welcome all Jews.

Brave Call

I loved that the JN printed the
announcement about the union cer-
emony for the two men. I think that is
great and I hope you get lots of sup-
port for doing it. It was a very brave
call.

Thanks, Yossi
My family was among those who
hosted Israeli Scouts during their July
20-22 visit to Metro Detroit. It was
a great experience — this chance to
meet such bright, mature teenagers
who exude a passion for Israel that's
infectious. They represent Israel's
future, and I know that can only be a
positive.
I also wanted to thank Yossi
Benjamin of Yossi's Israeli Cuisine in
West Bloomfield for refusing to take
any money and insisting on providing
an authentic Israeli lunch for all of the
Scouts and their host families before
the Tzofim Friendship Caravan left for
Cincinnati, their next stop. That was a
very special meal, indeed.

A 'Wacko Fringe'

How many of your readers walked
away from your coverage of the Neturei
Karta presence at the Hezbollah rally
in Dearborn realizing how small and
insignificant that organization is?
("Supporting Hezbollah," July 27, page
24). Simply put, they are a fringe,
wacko and miniscule group that are an
embarrassment to all Jews. Shouldn't
the JN have made that clear?

Or Chadash Classes

On behalf of Congregation Or Chadash,
I'm pleased to thank special writer
Gabrielle Burman and the Jewish
News for presenting our shul so well
and so thoroughly ("A Permanent
Home," Aug. 3, page 38).
Please let me add what the article
did not cover. Rabbi Cohen has been
teaching evening classes in Gemara
(separate sessions for men and women),
Halachah and the weekly Torah por-
tion since long before Or Chadash was
founded; and we take some pride that
they continue under our banner.
Those who would like information
on times, venues and topics can call
Rabbi Cohen, (248) 544-2687.
