Hall of Fame.

Steve Stein
Special to The Jewish News

etroit Red Wings defense-
man Mathieu Schneider,
the all-time leading
Jewish scorer in NHL history, heads
the 2006 induction class for the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Schneider, entering his fourth year
with the Red Wings, has 189 goals
and 422 assists in 1,064 regular-sea-
son games spanning 20 seasons. He's
a two-time NHL All-Star,
a two-time U.S. Olympic
Team member, and he
recently was named to the
National Hockey League
. Players Association's inter-
im executive committee.
The other 2006 Hall of
Fame inductees are ten-
nis standout Marianne
Caplan, tennis and
squash star Larry Stark
and the late Bert Ruby,
a professional wrestler
and promoter. Caplan
and Stark played No. 1
singles for Berkley High
school tennis teams before
making their mark in the collegiate
ranks.
The newest members of the Hall
of Fame will be inducted Nov. 6
during the Michigan Jewish Sports
Foundation's annual dinner at •
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield. Five recent high school
graduates also will be honored that
night. Ross Tashjian from Novi
Catholic Central, Gabe Schubiner
from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook
Kingswood, A.J. Roberts from
Cranbrook Kingswood and Nurit
Weizman from Ann Arbor Huron
are the 2006 Jewish News High
School Athletes of the Year. Yan
Isayev from Berkley and Weizman
are the recipients of $2,500 Bill Hertz
Memorial Scholarships. This is the
first time there are four Athletes of
the Year. The award has been pre-
sented since 1991. Two boys and one
girl were selected in 1994, 1999 and

2001. Tashjian is the first honoree
who attended a Catholic school.
Tashjian and Schubiner are profiled
below. The Hall of Fame inductees,
Roberts, Weizman and Isayev, will be
profiled in later columns.

Ross Tashjian
Catholic Central's strong hockey
program and friends on the team
attracted Tashjian to the school. The
goalie transferred after attending
Walled Lake Western as a freshman.

Ross Tashjian

"Going to Catholic Central was
my idea. I pursued it on my own,"
the Farmington Hills resident said.
Tashjian had to sit out his sopho-
more season at Catholic Central
because of Michigan High School
Athletic Association transfer rules,
but he stayed active in hockey by
playing for the Detroit Compuware
AAA team.
Even though he wasn't Catholic
Central's full-time goalie as a junior,
Tashjian was between the pipes for
the Shamrocks' 4-0 victory over East
Kentwood in the Division 1 state
championship game. He made 16
saves.
Tashjian was Catholic Central's No.
1 goalie last season. The Shamrocks
finished 23-7, losing to Orchard Lake
St. Mary 3-1 in the regional finals.
The next hockey stop for Tashjian,
17, is Lincoln, Neb. He'll play next
