EDITOR'S LETTER

Our goal is to be a part of the
fabric of the Jewish community

WHEN I WAS YOUNG, I loved going back to school. The change of the
seasons, the prospect of new classes, new teachers, new adventures, new friends
(and old) — I found all of it pretty exciting. One particular highlight: Every
year, my mom would take my brother, Ben, and me to Jerome's Shoes at
Harvard Row in Southfield to be fitted for a new pair of saddle shoes or Mary
Janes (which would double as our High Holiday and Sunday school dress-up
shoes).
I also remember my first day of Hebrew school. I wanted to wear my favor-
ite pair of Levi's (my Calvins and Jordache didn't come around 'til junior high).
My mother insisted I wear a dress, as she had done — and not just any dress,
but a hand-me-down green corduroy jumper with a coordinating green-and-
brown blouse. My mother said it was "adorable." I disagreed.
When I arrived, of course, all the girls were wearing blue jeans.
And they still are. But good-old Levi's (still a mainstay in many a fashion-
able closet) have broadened to countless designer names in equally infinite
styles, washes, fits and more. For a glimpse at what will be walking the school
halls this fall, we asked contributing fashion stylist Dana Kushkin to outfit
four local high-school students and B.F.F. and let them loose at Thunderbird
Lanes in Troy, where photographer Angie Baan captured their energy beauti-
fully (see "Jean Genies").
Also in this back-to-school issue of Platinum: We've rounded up some
favorite products for students of all ages (Platinum Picks) and were invited
inside the Park Shelton apartment of medical student Sam Taylor, which will
be featured on an upcoming episode of HGTV's My First Apartment. Enjoy!

and to reflect those who have
created it — our readers.
