cathartic to do something physical
when you feel strongly about some-
thing:' Segel explains. "What we face is
nothing compared to the Israeli civil- •
ians stuck in bomb shelters not know-
ing what will come next. The West
Bloomfield police and the township
have been wonderful. They have been
very encouraging and are well aware of
the safety needs of the participants."
Sally Krugel of Bloomfield Hills, who
is active in many Jewish community
groups, has been promoting participa-
tion, too.
"It is important to be visible so
the community, media and elected
officials know we are behind Israel at
this very difficult timer Krugel says.
"Israelis hear about these events across
the nation and they are encouraged;'
she says. Additionally, she encourages
support by urging people to call and e-
mail their Israeli friends and family.
The list of event sponsors keeps
growing, with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit signing on early
this we ek. Other sponsors include the
Zionist Organization of America, Adat
Shalom Synagogue, B'nai B'rith Great

White Sunday'
offers visible
support for
Israel.

E

very day is a good day
to advocate for Israel.
But what if one day a
week was chosen for support-
ers of Israel to take a personal
and public stand for the Jewish
State?
The goal of Blue & White
Sunday, a Detroit Jewish News
initiative, is just that. Every
Sunday, community members
are urged to wear blue and white
clothing (to mimic the colors
of the Israeli flag) as well as
T-shirts, hats, buttons, jewelry
— anything wearable that will let
others know they take a visible
stand for Israel.
Not everyone is comfortable
engaging in political arguments,

Lakes Region, Temple Shir Shalom,
Jewish War Veterans, Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, Jewish National Fund,
Michigan Friends of the Israel Defense
Forces, Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah and Anti-
Defamation League Michigan Region.
Segel, who hasn't undertaken a
fundraising effort to match his public
relations and organizing effort, expects
to be able to provide water for the
walkers, but also encourages people to
bring their own. There will be a lim-
ited number of signs and flags, and he
urges folks to bring their own items to
show Israel in a positive light. E

Israel Solidarity Walk will begin at
1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Temple
Shir Shalom, at the southeast
corner of Orchard Lake and
Walnut Lake roads, and progress
south on Orchard Lake to Orchard
Mall at Maple Road. Walkers will
then return to Shir Shalom. For
more information, contact Mark
Segel at (248) 208-2773.

but everyone can show solidar-
ity with the people of Israel by
"showing their colors."
Let your friends and neighbors
know you are strong in your sup-
port of Israel by participating in
Blue & White Sunday.
To get the word out to the
entire community about this
show of support, the Detroit
Jewish News is urging local
organizations and institutions
to participate by informing their
members of the Blue & White
Sunday initiative and by leading
by example. Volunteers are mak-
ing calls and sending e-mails to
gather support and get the word
out. If you haven't been contact-
ed, call (248) 354-6060 to join
the effort.
And, as an individual com-
munity member, take the time
. to put on that Israel T-shirt this
Sunday, for example, and head
to the Israel Solidarity Walk at 1
p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, starting at
Temple Shir Shalom at Orchard
Lake and Walnut Lake roads.
So "show your colors" on Blue
& White Sunday and let others
know that Israel is important to
you and that wherever we stand,
we stand with Israel.
