my life, it's really Broadway-based
— songs I sang on Broadway, songs I
didn't sing on Broadway and songs I
wished I sang on Broadway. Bells Are
Ringing was my first Broadway show,
so there certainly are songs from that.
There also are songs, such as 'Mack
the Knife: I did as a musician when I
first started performing.
"I make a stab at Barney Miller
— because I know people will be
thinking about Barney Miller and
wondering what he's doing in concert.
So, right off the bat, I take care of
that. I do 'In My Own Lifetime' from
The Rothschilds, which premiered in
Detroit and brought me a Tony, and
I do a Benny Goodman medley to
recall my early background."

a little, and the next thing I knew, I
wanted to give acting a shot. Theater
soon became the center of my life."
Linden, who studied at the
American Theatre Wing and with
private instructors, appeared in
On a Clear Day You Can See
Forever, Subways Are for Sleeping,
The Apple Tree and The Pajama
Game. When he was doing The
Rothschilds, he was seen by the pro-
ducer of Barney Miller and got the
role.
"Barney Miller was disappointing
in the beginning because I never had
the funny lines," says Linden, mar-
ried for 48 years to former dancer
Frances Martin. "I was the straight
man before realizing that Jack Benny
did pretty
well as a
straight
man. I
came to
terms with
the part
and got to
love it."
Linden,
the father
of four and grandfather of eight,
makes his home in California and
enjoys golfing and bridge between
work assignments. More than appear-
ing as a new character, he relishes
the process of putting together the
aspects of a role.
"I'm not arbitrary in my choices
of scripts:' says Linden, who
changed his surname from Lipshitz.
"Everything I do is thought out
through my prism of ideas. I think
of myself as an executive artist in
theater. After somebody else did the
writing and somebody else did the
directing, I'm executing other peo-
ple's creativity.
"When I go out and do a concert,
I'm kind of in charge. I don't have
to answer to a director, and I don't
have to give the right cue to a co-star.
If the audience seems to want to go
a certain way, I can go that way. It's
much more intimate communication
betWeen an artist and audience when
I'm doing a concert like the one corn-
ing up in Michigan." 7

Hal Linden

Linden, whose commitment to the
JNF has been strong for nine years,
interrupts his preparation for the
play Darwin in Malibu to honor
his temple engagement. The .comedy,
which he will try, out on Long Island,
is done in full British accent with a
modern setting.
"I loved the play when I read it," .
says Linden, recently seen in guest
roles on King of Queens and Law &
Order. "Any time I get caught up in a
play I'm reading, I know I'm going to
get caught up in working on it."

Family Tradition
Linden, traveling with his own
- conductor for the West Bloomfield
concert, was not interested in theater
as a young man. He followed family
tradition and prepared for a career
as a musician, studying at the High
School of Music and Art and Queens
College, both in New York.
"All my older brothers and cousins
were musicians, and by the time they
got to me, they asked which instru-
ment I wanted;' recalls Linden. "We
had violins lying around, a piano and
clarinet. I picked the clarinet because
the violin can be pretty painful for
the person playing it and everybody
around him.
"I slid into theater accidentally
after doing shows in the Army. I sang

Jeff and the Royal Catering staff were professional and stress-free to work
