Who's thinking what — and why?
I
"I want to share my passion for the Jewish commu
nity with other young adults," says JENNIFER LERN
FRIEDMAN, 31, of Huntington Woods. The newly installe
2006-2007 president of the Young Adult Division of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Friedman will
for the next year, lead the organization -- helping t
educate her peers and inspiring 20- and 30-somethi
to get involved. "We are the future, and I look forward
carrying the torch," she told a crowd at her recent ind
tion ceremony.
Friedman is taking on this leadership position at a
time in her life. She's a Ph.D. psychologist working at
Twin Beach and Oakley Park elementary schools in the
Walled Lake Consolidated School District. She's also in
private practice, specializing in child and adolescent ps
chotherapy. At home, Jennifer and her husband, Lowell
are busy raising their 2-year-old son, Max. We asked t

WHAT BOOK, CD, MOVIE OR OTHER MEDIA
DO YOU LONG TO SHARE WITH OTHERS?
New Yorker magazine. It's my favorite way to
cover all bases, combining news, global analysis, the
arts and comic relief. It also allows me to keep current
on the various goings-on in New York City, such as
new Broadway shows and museum exhibits, and well-
written movie reviews. In fact, it also provides con-
stant fodder for discussions with my father, who loves
to cut out relevant cartoons and give them to others.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD?
I have two favorite Jewish foods, which
come from each of my bubbies. First,
my Bubbie Rose's stuffed cabbage is a deli-
cious blend of sweet and tangy flavors, in
which you can sometimes be lucky enough
to find a bit of unmelted ginger snap. She
always made certain to roll the stuffed cab-
bage in her special way to avoid using tooth-
picks. Second, I have yet to come across a
potato kugel like my Bubbie Esther's. It is
thin and crispy on the outer edges with fla-
vorful gooey potato on the inside. You can
eat it hot or cold for completely different ver-
sions.

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH ONE
BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH
FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
I dream about having brunch with Golda Meir. To
me, she is the epitome of a successful career woman,
who raised two children and ran the State of Israel.
I would ask her how she was able to maintain her
Zionist passion over the years and how she dealt with
the diversity in ideology within the Israeli Knesset.
Her wealth of knowledge and experience would be
incredible to learn from, especially taking into account
her life in Kiev, the United States and Israel. I'd also
love to glean the secrets of Golda's uncanny ability to
articulate her passion, which on one occasion secured
the funding from United States Jewry for the military
of the new State of Israel and allowed Israel to gain
victory in the War of Independence.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED
TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Based on what I've been doing lately,
I think people might be surprised to know
I was voted "Ferris Bueller" in high school.
Matthew Broderick's character [in the film
Ferris Bueller's Day Of] was utterly creative in
finding ways to miss school and take advan-
tage of opportunities to have more fun. He
skipped school in his suburban town to hang
out with his best friend and girlfriend and
play in the city. 111
