Meetings will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building, 6735 Telegraph Road, Bloomfield Township, and Wednesday, Aug. 9, from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Rabbi Michele Faudem will teach a sample class on Tuesday evening and Dr. Mitch Parker will conduct a class on Wednesday morning. Florence Melton Adult Mini-School Director Judy Loebl will be available at both sessions to answer questions. The Florence Melton Adult Mini- School offers the Jewish community in-depth classes geared to adults of all ages, from all backgrounds. The mini- school provides a comprehensive cur- riculum that will challenge and inspire students as they learn from top edu- cators about Jewish heritage, history and culture in a non-denominational environment. The program takes two years to complete; and classes meet once a week for 30 weeks, from September through the beginning of June. The curriculum was created by a team of scholars and educators at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. There are no grades or exams, and no prerequisite knowledge is required. The school is open to any member of the Jewish community. First-year classes will be beginning in September on Tuesday evenings at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township; Wednesday mornings at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield; and, new this year, Thursday evenings at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park. There is also a program designed especially for parents of children, toddler through elementary school. The Melton PEP (Parent Education Program) provides parents the oppor- tunity to strengthen their own under- standing of Judaism so that they in turn may answer their children's ques- tions and nurture their growing Jewish identity. First-year PEP classes meet at Adat Shalom Synagogue on Monday mornings. The Florence Melton Adult Mini- School is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for Jewish Education and the Jewish Community Center. Remembrance Event Set The David-Horodoker Organization will host a program honoring the memories of family and friends who perished in the Holocaust. The pro- gram will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Holocaust Memorial Center, 28123 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills. The David-Horodoker Organization in Israel has proclaimed the 17th day of Av as Remembrance Day. On that day all the landsleit (fellow countrymen) of David-Horodok should gather and light a candle in remembrance of those who perished at the hands of the Nazis in 1941 and 1942. The Yizkor prayers will be said in memory of the men of David-Horodok who were marched into the woods and shot on Aug. 10, 1941. A year later, the women and chil- dren were marched to the same spot and joined the men in the mass grave. Members will recite from an original memorial program prepared by Kathy Winston. The program book, which has a listing of the names of those who perished, will be presented to attend- ees. For information and to respond for the program, call (248) 855-6955. Art Of Resorts Detroit-area Jews whose families vacationed in South Haven will enjoy Attending a special event on Thursday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m., highlighting the exhibit "Catskills of the Midwest: the Jewish Resorts of South Haven," now on view in the main lobby of Temple Israel. The Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and Temple Israel are presenting a program by Bea Kraus, author of A Time to Remember: A History of the Jewish Community in South Haven, which recaptures the fun of summer vacations in that resort area during the first half of the 20th century. Following her presenta- tion, Kraus and a group of docents will help locate family members and friends of attendees in the photos on view. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be on view only until Labor Day. The Aug. 10 event is free to members of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan and Temple Israel members; $5 for others.
