Not Torah True
The Torah is the basis of the life of
the Jewish people. We have been
given the privilege of being a "light
unto the nations." Your paper defines
itself as Jewish. To us and thousands
of other Metro Detroit Jews, this-
means reporting news and commu-
nity events, etc., according •to what
is Jewish — with Jewish values and
morals. This is what makes some-
thing Jewish.
Although there are Jews among
us who have a lifestyle leading to
same-sex unions, it should not be ap-
plauded. Jewish youth should not be
influenced by having a Jewish paper
sanction same-sex unions. Not all
news is fit to print if you are a Jewish
newspaper.

Won't Subscribe
Unfortunately, because of your deci-
sion to include same-sex union
announcements in the Jewish News,
a practice that flies in the face of very
strong and clear Torah prohibitions,
I will not subscribe to the Jewish
News, something I had been about
to do as a relative newcomer to this
area.
While I personally do not pass
judgment on those who choose to
lead alternative lifestyles, I strongly
believe that publication of same-sex
union announcements goes over the
line for a Jewish publication that is
intended to service a broad range of
Jewish observance because underly-
ing all of that range sits the single
foundation and guiding source for
all of us to live our lives as Jews
— Torah.
I am deeply sorry that the Jewish
News has chosen this path, and will
not reconsider a subscription to the
JN unless that path is altered.

Equal Right
Love is love, no matter who is loving
who. No one has the right to tell any-
one who they can love or who they
can marry. We all have the right to
the same things in this life. No one
should have the right to tell another
what he or she can do with their
body, their life or their love.
I congratulate the Jewish News
on the recent gay couple's union
announcement. I read the New York
Times Style section every Sunday
and it has been publishing such
announcements for a very long
time. Mazel toy!

A Positive Step
I'm thrilled to see that you've
included a gay couple's union in the
announcements. This is the way it
should be if we are all to have equal
rights. Hopefully, in the future, we
won't even notice a gay announce-
ment because it will be routine.
Thank you.

Beyond Reasonable
I found it quite disturbing to learn
that transfer of John Katz's butcher
shop from father to son would
require the payment of an extra $500
per week to the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis ("Shrinking Market," July 13,
page 13).
Does the COR not believe in con-
tinuity from one generation to the
next? Is it really ethical to autocrati-
cally increase the financial burden to
the younger generation that already
suffers from increasing financial
pressures
I doubt if there is a justification
for such an approach in Jewish law

?

(Halachah).
