of North Texas and her master's degree
in flute from the Boston Conservatory.
"I went to Texas because it was
known for its jazz education:' explains
Thomas, who also continued with her
classical studies and moved into guitar
opportunities. "While I was living in
Boston, friends in New York encour-
aged me to join them to do jazz gigs
and write so I moved in 1995."
To earn money while pursuing
performance possibilities, Thomas
found work as a planner of financial
conferences held all over the world. It
was preparation for her current job, an
administrative position that includes
making arrangements for events
planned at Lawrence Technological
University in Southfield.
"I moved back to Michigan in 2001
and performed pretty regularly',' says
Thomas, a resident of Commerce
Township married to software devel-
oper John Thomas. "I'm very happy
to be part of Lorelei, an a cappella
ensemble!'
As Thomas appeared in concerts
and continued writing songs, she
was nominated for Outstanding Jazz
Vocalist in the Detroit Music Awards
for 2004 and 2006. Her original song
"Wading in Waiting" was awarded
Honorable Mention in the 2004 Metro
Detroit Songwriting Contest.
Her songs "Make Me Blue" and "One
More Day" ranked in the semifinals in
the 2005 UK Songwriting Contest.
Thomas appeared with Ian
Anderson (Jethro Tull) as guest flutist
in a 2003 show at the State Theater
and has been a featured performer as
part of the Oxygen Network's National
Tank Tour in New York City. With
Lorelei, she performed at Ford Field
during Super Bowl activities.
Thomas, who works on Living
Christmas Card holiday shows with
Lorelei, studied at Congregation Beth
Shalom while growing up and attends
High Holy Day services at the Jewish
Community Center.
"The new CD was funded by me
and was produced in three months,
which is a short time in the record-
ing business:' says Thomas, who also
enjoys cooking, gardening and travel-
ing. "Of all the musical work that I do,
songwriting is the most important to
me." 1 I
