make the marked headway she wanted
until she returned to her home state.
Thomas, recently recognized at the
Detroit Music Awards, expresses her
feelings in her second CD, There and
Back Again, which she introduces
in performance Sunday evening, July
30, at Club Bart in Ferndale. Her first
recording, Some Strong Potion, was
released in 2000.
"I moved back to Michigan to be
with family, and I worked on this CD
as self-therapy for whatever I was fac-
ing," says Thomas, 37, who wrote some
of the songs before her final decision
to leave Manhattan. "I hoped that the
music would help me lighten up."
The CD, with 10 original numbers
featuring jazz rhythms, expresses her
urge to move forward and achieve
her dreams. The "Relocation Song"
declares that she had to "either stop
and stay all locked away or open a
brand new door." The song "Hunger"

makes clear that "the stage is yours to
take.
For the recording, Thomas is on
vocals, flute, keyboards and shaker.
Other musicians are Kris Kurzawa on
guitars, Patrick Prouty on acoustic and
electric bass, Bill Higgins on drums
and Tom Rice on clavinet, claves,
tambourine and triangle. Ted Cruz
handles keyboards and instrumental
sequences for "Under the Bridge:'

A Life In Music
"I've listened to jazz ever since I can
remember," says Thomas, who learned
piano from her mom, Renee Kash, and
moved on to study flute. "I've always
wanted a career in music."
While living in Oak Park and
attending Berkley High School,
Thomas played in the school band
and orchestra and appeared with
rock bands on weekends. She studied
with Ervin Monroe of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and became part
of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony
and the Detroit Symphony Civic
Orchestra.
