triathlete and marathon run-
ner, Jill Sherman-Marx loves
being a personal trainer and
spinning instructor because she gets to
challenge her clients to become stron-
ger and fit — and healthier along the
way.
"I really strive to help each person
to reach their highest potential;' said
Sherman-Marx, 38.
Thinking healthy not only is essential
to physical health, but also to mental
wellness. "It doesn't matter how old you
are when you start:' she said. "The ben-
efits are endless:'
Sherman-Marx, a mother of three,
has been certified for five years. The
Farmington Hills resident teaches
spinning, yoga and weight classes at
the Jewish Community Center and the
Sports Club, both in West Bloomfield.
Clients range from teenagers to octo-
genarians."I have clients who are com-
petitive athletes. I have clients that have
weight problems and eating disorders. I
also have clients that have Alzheimer's
disease."
If you're thinking you need to be
active before seeking out a personal
trainer, think again. Sherman-Marx will

match equipment and intensity to your
fitness level. "It's the one job you can
show up for with no prior experience

of a physician for a medical condition, a
doctor's note will be necessary"
The American Heart Association rec-
ommends a time commitment of one
hour six days a week to feel good and
be ft. "But any commitment you are
willing to make is better than a seden-
tary lifestyle Sherman-Marx said.
Summer means competition for
her. She tries to run a race about every
other weekend. The U.S. Association
of Triathletes ranks her 553. She runs
about 20 miles a week, spins and swims
twice a week, and lifts weights four
times a week. She also does yoga twice
a week. Competing locally this summer,
she finished first twice in her age group
in sprint-distance triathlons.
Serious athletes work out at least six
days a week. "They listen to their body','
Sherman-Marx said. "Our bodies tell
us just about everything we need to
know. The problem is that sometimes
\ye don't listen. This usually is when
injuries may occur:'
The Oak Park native found exercise
after suffering depression in her late
teens. "It helped me recover in a natural
