Detroit Friends
of Alyn Hospital

is proud to honor

of Arab American Organizations
(CAAO), which represents 42 local
Arab organizations and organized
the rally. He had harsh words for
President Bush as well as the Arab
League, which he accused of not
doing enough to stop Israel.
"We will not submit:' he said,
calling for diplomacy and an
immediate ceasefire.
Osama Siblani, editor of the Arab
American News and past president
of the CAAO, who served as the
program's emcee, said, "We know
that the president is being bought
by the Zionist lobby. We know that
the Congress is being bought by
the Zionist lobby" in an effort to
explain almost unanimous U.S.
government support for Israel.
Rev. Rani Abdulmasih, a
Palestinian Lutheran pastor at
Abundant Life Arabic Church, said
the issue was one of justice, not of
Palestine and Lebanon, but that
"human beings are suffering." A
relative voice of moderation, he
said that stereotypes of Arabs and
Middle-Easterners haVe led the
world to stand by while innocent
people are being killed. He urged
the crowd's response to not be one
of anger, or one would reinforce
negative stereotypes.
Imam Husham Al-Husainy,
director of the Karbala Islamic
Educational Center, h6sted the
Neturei Karta representatives at his
mosque in a meeting that some of
the news media lauded for being
interfaith. During part of the pro-
gram, Al-Husainy also held the pic-
ture of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah
aloft on the stage.
Sharona Shapiro, the Bloomfield
Township-based Michigan area
director of the American Jewish
Committee, said, "I was among
the thousands who attended the
Dearborn walk and rally yesterday
and I never felt so alone in my life.
I walked in a sea of Arab American
bodies to see and hear the speeches
of their community leaders, to hear
their protests of 'Israeli terrorism
and U.S. injustice.' 1
