Gilad Shalit, kidnapped by Hamas terror- ists ("To The Last," July 6, page 22). We listened as leaders of our Jewish and African-American Christian communities told how we were linked with communities in South America, Europe and Australia in a common cause for a defender of the Jewish people and Israel being held in cruel, illegal captivity. We also learned that our black Christian friends remember we were their allies in their fight for modern- day liberty and are with us because they will not forget. I congratulate the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit for organizing the rally to call for the release of Cpl. Shalit and those from our community that stood in solidarity for the release of Cpl. Shalit. Ed Kohl West Bloomfield Parent Says Thanks The entire community should acknowledge and thank the Federation leadership and staff, the Teen Mission 2006 leadership staff and the rabbis for the wonderful job they did in getting our children out of Israel and on their way home. As I write this, I have just heard from my daughter Carly who is safe in London and will be home and safe with us tonight along with all of the rest of the Teen Mission partici- pants after a truly unforgettable Teen Mission experience. When my daughter left on the mis- sion, I was thrilled that she would be visiting Israel (the first in our family). I was heartbroken as events developed that eventually resulted in the cancellation of the remainder of the trip; however, all of the decisions of those involved, their accessibility MOW( MARKET ACCOUNT $5° '° I' --- in trying times and their up-to-the- minute communications should make us all proud of the seemingly endless work that they did under incredible pressure. Thanks to all for a job well done. Merrill Gordon West Bloomfield Wrong Claim I am dismayed by the closing para- graph of Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter "A Range Of Emotions" (July 13, page 5). After commenting on the appalling music video airing on Palestinian TV, which depicts a child enticing other children to become "martyrs:' our Detroit Jewish News editor falls into the same category by claiming "God gave the Jewish people" the land of Israel! How can we expect to have peace when people on both sides are so entrenched in the belief that their "God" gave them the land? Paula Creed Farmington Hills Acknowledgment Cheered Congratulations to the Jewish News for finally recognizing and including gay union celebrations. Hopefully, other local publications will follow your lead. Dianne Silverstein West Bloomfield How to Send Letters We prefer letters relating to JN arti- cles.
