MSU evacuates students in Israel.

T

he members of Michigan State
University's Jewish Studies
program studying this sum-
mer at Hebrew University in Jerusalem
will be evacuated on July 19, according
to Ken Waltzer, MSU Jewish Studies
director.
"MSU has
found seats for
the students
on a commer-
cial flight via
Amsterdam;
leaving
Wednesday at
5:30 a.m.," he
Ken Waltzer
said.
Some will fly directly home; some
will stay in Amsterdam overnight. "I
am facilitating the departure, oversee-
ing getting kids to Tel Aviv," Waltzer
said.
Avi Davidoff, 19, of West Bloomfield,
one of the nine students in the pro-
gram, was disappointed. "We all knew
that the university was going to make
the decision they made July 16," he said,
while walking to Ben-Yehuda Street in
Jerusalem with friends the next day.
"Obviously, extreme amounts of pres-
sure were being made because of the
Teen Mission withdrawal."
The waiting was frustrating.
"In a way, I guess I'm happy to be
coming home because I knew it was
going to hap-
pen," Davidoff
said. "I was just
sick of waiting
around to find
out. Cutting
it short is not
what I want, but
also my parents
Avi Davidoff
are worried and
I understand, so I guess coming home
is the best thing to do:'
"The provost and MSU leadership
decided to cancel the program and
work to evacuate the students, fearing
options for evacuation later will not
be as readily available,' said Waltzer,
moments after a conference call with
MSU officials. "The university wants to
preserve the conditions under which
we will continue to have opportunities

for students to study in Israel."
Parents also were involved in the
conference call.
"I thought it was extraordinary
the way they handled it," said Mark
Davidoff of West Bloomfield, Avi's
father. His younger son, Kale, 15, was
on Federation's Teen Mission. "They are
disappointed that they have to leave,
and they're disappointed that they
can't be there to support their Israeli
friends:'
The study abroad program was
reinstated after a six-year absence
in November 2005, and Waltzer led
nine students to the program at the
Rothberg International School at
Hebrew University this year.
One student left on July 15.

The Friends of the Israel Defense
Forces has begun an emergency
campaign in support of the Israeli
troops fighting terrorists in Gaza
and Lebanon.
The money raised will go for:
• Personal care packages that
include deodorant, toothpaste, a
toothbrush, shampoo, new under-
wear and other amenities.
• Air conditioned recreational
tents where soldiers can cool
off and enjoy television, a DVD,
pingpong tables, books and board
games.
• Open canteens where soldiers
receive snacks, ice cream and
other refreshments.
The FIDF is preparing the recre-
ational facilities in northern Israel.
The care packages will help main-
tain the morale and spirit of the
soldiers.
"No country in the world would
accept a cross-border kidnap-
ping of its citizens," said Tamir
Oppenheim of the Michigan
Friends of the IDF. "And no coun-
try in the world would accept
anything less than the immediate,
unconditional release of its kid-
napped soldiers."

IDF, call (248) 203-2060 or log on
